Job Summary and duties:

The Arizona State Retirement System is seeking a proactive individual with work experience in pension-related calculations to fill a lead role in Member Benefits.

  • Provide training, coaching, mentoring and feedback to Pension Calculations Specialists in conjunction with and support from the supervisor.
  • Participate in process changes and updates.
  • Performs, reviews and validates complex calculations for ASRS benefits. This includes reviewing the calculation and processing elements completed by others to ensure accuracy, completeness, and proper payment of benefits.
  • Communicates with members, internal staff, and employers through all modes of communication.
  • Researches, analyzes and verifies information relating to members and beneficiaries, benefit payments, and member accounts following statute and legal determinations.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state legislation and Internal Revenue Service regulations.
  • Assists with cross divisional work, as assigned. Mentoring others.
  • Other duties as assigned as related to the position.

This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of automated financial/disbursement systems and databases.
  • Knowledge of statutes, policies and procedures, and information systems pertaining to ASRS.
  • Knowledge of IRS regulations with regard to payment and reporting of annuities and lump sum disbursements.
  • Advanced analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Attention to detail to process a high volume of varying calculations and reviews and meet multiple deadlines with a superior level of accuracy.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and in team environment.
  • Proactive in resolving complex issues and improving inefficiencies.
  • Exercise a high degree of initiative and independence.
  • Strong computer skills with emphasis on Excel and relational databases.
  • Superior organizational skills in order to multi task and adapt easily to changing priorities.
  • Proven ability to apply Arizona statutes to work process.

Selective Preference(s):

The ideal candidate for this position will have:

  • Prefer one year of work experience calculating and reviewing benefits, pensions, or similar financial transactions.
  • Prefer one year work experience calculating adjustments to individual account balances.
  • Prefer Bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in math.
