Business Office Team Leader

Hybrid/Remote Availability in Minnesota

The Business Office Team Leader provides operational and personnel leadership for the Business Office, ensuring efficient, compliant, and customer focused billing operations. This position oversees departmental workflows, supervises staff performance, promotes continuous process improvement, monitors key performance indicators, and collaborates with organizational leaders to support financial stewardship, regulatory compliance, and exceptional patient service.

Responsibilities

  • Provides day-to-day leadership for the Business Office by establishing priorities, coordinating departmental operations, communicating organizational initiatives and fostering a collaborative, accountable, and positive work environment.
  • Oversees Business Office operations to ensure accurate billing, reimbursement accounts receivable management, and compliance with federal, state, and third-party payer requirements.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, through monitoring, education, auditing, and process improvement.
  • Monitors key performance indicators, and implements corrective actions as needed.
  • Collaborates with clinical, operational, and financial leaders to improve billing performance, resolve complex issues, and support organizational initiatives.
  • Serves as an escalation resource for complex patient account concerns, promoting effective communication, financial transparency, and positive customer services experiences.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains departmental policies, procedures, and standardized workflows that promote consistency, compliance, and operational effectiveness.
  • Oversees the administration, maintenance, and optimization of departmental technology systems, including Epic, Experian, Availity, payer portals, and other Business Office applications.
  • Ensures system functionality through user access management, issue resolution, coordination with IT and vendors, and submission and follow-up of system support requests.
  • Leads departmental implementation of organizational initiatives, regulatory changes, and workflow improvements in line with industry best practices, while effectively managing changes and supporting staff through transitions.
  • Provides operational support to the Business Office team by performing essential billing cycle functions, including but not limited to prior authorization processing, payer credentialing, and other responsibilities as needed to ensure continuity of operations and exceptional customer service.
  • Serves as operational backup to the Revenue Cycle Director by providing leadership continuity, supporting departmental oversight and assuming delegated responsibilities to ensure uninterrupted department operations.

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and accountability for departmental operations in alignment with the organization's mission, values, policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Establishes clear expectations and leads assigned staff through coaching, performance management, professional development, and corrective action as appropriate.
  • Communicates and collaborates effectively across departments, exercises sound judgment in decision-making, and contributes to organizational initiatives.
  • Demonstrates fiscal responsibility through effective resource management and adherence to approved budgets, as applicable to the role.
  • Partners with Human Resources to support recruitment, selection, and onboarding to ensure staffing needs are met with qualified talent.
  • Partners with Human Resources on employee relations matters, performance management, policy interpretation, corrective actions, leave administration, and other employment-related issues.

Wage

$65,000 - $70,000 annually

Schedule

Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week. Hybrid/remote availability in Minnesota.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum Associates degree in finance or a related field is required; equivalent relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of education, at the discretion of EBCH.
  • 3-5 years of experience in Critical Access Hospital billing.
  • 2-4 years of experience of leadership or supervisory experience, preferably withing a healthcare billing, business office, or related setting.
  • Extensive knowledge of Medicare, Medical Assistance, and other third-party payor rules and regulations and their billing requirements.
  • Knowledge in CPT and ICD codes, and medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of state and federal billing and collection laws.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Administration, Business, or related field.
