Job Description

If you’re passionate about being part of a dynamic organization that enables a Fortune 100 company with nearly $70 billion in annual sales to drive innovation and adopt new technologies that deliver business results, then Nationwide’s Technology team could be the place for you! At Nationwide®, “on your side” goes beyond just words. Our customers are at the center of everything we do and we’re looking for associates who are passionate about delivering extraordinary care.

Compute Dragons is Nationwide’s actuarial compute infrastructure support team. The team manages and supports critical actuarial platforms and services including GGY AXIS, GlaaS, Beowulf HPC, AWS cloud resources, workflow orchestration, ETL pipelines, and external data feed integrations that support the NF Actuarial division. We are looking for a strong infrastructure/platform engineer who can own production stability, platform operations, automation, security, and modernization across this compute estate.

This role is best suited for someone who is comfortable working across Windows-based compute platforms, cloud infrastructure, storage, access controls, operational support, and vendor-integrated actuarial systems.

What this role will do

Support and enhance actuarial compute platforms including GGY AXIS and GlaaS environments, Beowulf HPC operations, AWS S3 and EC2 resources, UAC workflow orchestration, SSIS and ETL pipelines, and external data integrations. Maintain and optimize AWS-hosted actuarial compute infrastructure, including GGY eLink, queue managers, compute nodes, and supporting database services used for actuarial modeling workloads. Support hybrid storage patterns using AWS Storage Gateway and S3-backed file shares that bridge on-prem actuarial storage and cloud platforms. Administer and improve IAM roles, access controls, KMS-backed encryption, and shared AWS platform capabilities used by the Compute Dragons environment. Participate in production support, incident response, operational monitoring, patching, and platform reliability activities needed to keep actuarial model runs and quarter-end processing stable. Partner with engineering, actuarial, and vendor teams to manage upgrades, infrastructure changes, platform risk remediation, and modernization efforts across the compute estate. Improve disaster recovery, backup, resiliency, and capacity planning for business-critical actuarial systems.

Key responsibilities

Platform operations

  • Own day-to-day support for actuarial compute and storage platforms.
  • Manage virtual and Windows on-prem servers that support actuarial compute platforms and related services.
  • Monitor availability, performance, capacity, and operational health of compute nodes, supporting servers, and storage integrations.
  • Troubleshoot production issues across infrastructure, connectivity, security, and application support boundaries.

Cloud and infrastructure engineering

  • Build, maintain, and improve AWS infrastructure supporting actuarial workloads.
  • Manage EC2, S3, IAM, KMS, networking, and storage-related configurations.
  • Support infrastructure changes with appropriate testing, rollback planning, and operational validation.

Security and controls

  • Support access control reviews, least-privilege access, MFA-enabled remote access, and secure handling of platform credentials and encryption keys.
  • Partner on vulnerability remediation, patching, audit support, and control evidence as needed.

Reliability and recovery

  • Support backup, restoration, disaster recovery, and recovery testing for key compute platforms and storage assets.
  • Help reduce operational risk tied to aging infrastructure, unsupported software, or manual operational processes.

Engineering and modernization

  • Identify automation opportunities in provisioning, monitoring, deployment, patching, access management, and reporting.
  • Contribute to platform modernization initiatives spanning cloud adoption, storage architecture, code pipeline improvements, and operational tooling.

Preferred candidate profile

Required skills

  • Strong experience supporting production infrastructure and platform services in enterprise environments.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS services such as EC2, S3, IAM, and KMS.
  • Experience with Windows Server administration, Active Directory, remote access controls, and operational support for server-based platforms.
  • Experience with infrastructure security, vulnerability remediation, patching, and operational monitoring.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex cross-platform issues involving compute, storage, networking, access, and batch processing.
  • Strong documentation, communication, and coordination skills for working with technical and business stakeholders.

Strongly preferred

  • Experience with HPC or distributed compute environments such as Beowulf-style clusters.
  • Experience supporting actuarial or financial modeling platforms such as GGY AXIS, eLink, or similar vendor products.
  • Experience with workflow scheduling, ETL, file transfer, and hybrid cloud storage integrations.
  • Experience working in regulated environments with audit, control, and resiliency expectations.

What success looks like

  • Compute platforms remain stable and available for actuarial model execution and downstream processing.
  • Infrastructure risks are identified early and remediated in a controlled way.
  • Backup, recovery, and DR readiness improve for business-critical actuarial systems.
  • Platform operations become more automated, secure, and scalable over time.
  • The team is better positioned to support growth in cloud-based actuarial compute and shared AWS services.

It is our intention to fill this role in Columbus, Ohio on a hybrid basis. The team come in for collaboration on Mondays and Tuesdays.
