Remote | legal research & case law review specialist — $70–$145/hour

We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for experienced legal research professionals with substantial expertise in Westlaw, citation validation, case law analysis, statutory research, and evaluation of complex legal reasoning. This role supports an advanced AI initiative focused on improving how legal research systems analyse authority, apply precedent, and evaluate complex legal issues.

Selected professionals will review AI-generated legal research, verify cited authorities, identify substantive and citation-level errors, and provide structured feedback grounded in professional legal research standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Legal Research Evaluation
• Review AI-generated legal research for accuracy, completeness, and professional quality
• Assess whether analyses identify and apply the most relevant legal authorities
• Evaluate the strength, clarity, and defensibility of legal reasoning
• Identify unsupported conclusions, omitted issues, and incomplete legal analysis
• Authority & Citation Validation
• Verify cited cases, statutes, regulations, and related legal authorities
• Confirm that authorities are current and remain valid law
• Identify incorrect citations, misstated holdings, outdated authority, and missing controlling precedent
• Use Westlaw research tools, including KeyCite, to assess authority status and subsequent treatment
• Precedent & Jurisdictional Analysis
• Distinguish binding authority from persuasive authority
• Evaluate whether precedent is applied correctly within the relevant jurisdiction
• Identify controlling decisions, conflicting authorities, and jurisdiction-specific considerations
• Review multi-jurisdictional research and complex questions involving overlapping legal frameworks
• Structured Feedback & Calibration
• Provide clear written explanations supporting evaluation decisions
• Develop structured feedback that improves the quality of AI-generated legal research
• Participate in calibration activities to support consistent review standards
• Incorporate evolving project guidance and reviewer feedback into future evaluations
• Collaborate asynchronously with legal research and quality-review teams

Ideal Profile

Strong candidates may have:

• At least 2 years of professional experience in a litigation-heavy, research-intensive, judicial, academic, or legal information role
• Regular professional experience using Westlaw for substantive legal research
• Strong familiarity with KeyCite and other advanced Westlaw research features
• Experience validating case law, statutes, regulations, and legal citations
• Ability to distinguish binding and persuasive authority accurately
• Excellent legal writing, analytical reasoning, and attention to detail
• Experience explaining complex research conclusions clearly and concisely
• Ability to work independently within an asynchronous project environment

Educational Background

A Juris Doctor degree and bar admission are highly relevant. An MLIS or equivalent qualification may be considered for candidates with professional law-library or substantive legal research experience. Advanced legal research, appellate advocacy, litigation, or legal information training may strengthen an application. Equivalent senior-level experience as a research attorney, judicial law clerk, law librarian, or legal researcher may also be considered.

Nice to Have

• Experience as a judicial law clerk or research attorney
• Familiarity with Lex Machina, PACER, Practical Law, or comparable legal research platforms
• Experience conducting multi-jurisdictional or 50-state legal research
• Background in commercial litigation, appellate practice, employment law, regulatory law, or government practice
• Experience reviewing briefs, memoranda, judicial opinions, or research assignments
• Familiarity with citation standards and professional legal research workflows
• Previous exposure to rubric development, structured evaluation, or AI training-data projects
• Experience supporting attorneys, courts, law firms, government agencies, or legal research teams
