Job Description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Payroll Manager based in United States.

This role offers the opportunity to lead payroll operations within a complex, multi-state environment while ensuring accuracy, compliance, and operational excellence.

You will oversee payroll processes, strengthen internal controls, and help improve systems that support employees across the organization.

The position combines payroll expertise, HR technology knowledge, analytics, and cross-functional collaboration.

You will partner with HR, Finance, Legal, and business stakeholders to deliver reliable payroll solutions and enhance employee experiences.

Accountabilities:

The Payroll Manager will oversee payroll administration, compliance, reporting, and process optimization while managing payroll operations across multiple states. This role requires strong technical payroll expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate with internal teams and external partners.

  • Manage and oversee accurate and timely payroll processing for hourly and salaried employees across multiple states and business entities.
  • Lead payroll team members, providing coaching, development, and guidance to ensure strong operational performance and expertise.
  • Maintain and strengthen payroll internal controls, ensuring compliance with audit requirements, SOX controls, and company policies.
  • Conduct payroll audits and prepare documentation to support internal and external audit requests.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations, including tax filings, amendments, reconciliations, and agency inquiries.
  • Investigate and resolve complex payroll issues while minimizing employee impact and maintaining regulatory compliance.
  • Oversee payroll processing related to long-term incentive programs, including equity vesting events, performance-based payouts, tax withholding, reporting, and reconciliation activities.
  • Develop, maintain, and deliver payroll reports and workforce analytics to support business decision-making.
  • Partner with HR, Finance, Legal, Compensation, and other stakeholders to align payroll processes with business needs and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with HRIS and database teams to improve payroll system structures, data accuracy, reporting capabilities, and automation opportunities.
  • Support compensation-related activities, including merit increases, incentive payments, mass changes, and special payroll cycles.
  • Ensure field teams have the knowledge, tools, and processes required for compliant payroll management.
  • Identify opportunities to improve payroll efficiency, automation, accuracy, and employee experience through technology and process enhancements.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality when handling sensitive employee and payroll information.
  • Participate in payroll-related projects and continuous improvement initiatives.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate is an experienced payroll leader with strong knowledge of payroll compliance, HR systems, analytics, and team management. This role requires excellent communication skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Accounting, Business, or a related field required.
  • 6+ years of professional payroll processing experience.
  • Previous experience managing payroll teams with a demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, and develop employees.
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll regulations, wage and hour laws, taxation requirements, and compliance practices.
  • Experience managing complex multi-state payroll operations.
  • Experience with payroll systems such as ADP Vantage or ADP platforms is preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and strong experience with payroll reporting and data analysis.
  • Ability to understand database structures, system dependencies, and translate business needs into payroll reporting solutions.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present information and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously from planning through execution.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion with sensitive employee information.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively within cross-functional teams.

Benefits:

Competitive salary range of $111,000 - $160,950 USD based on qualifications, skills, experience, and market factors.

Eligibility for a 14% annual incentive bonus based on company performance and individual goals.
