Position Overview
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) is seeking an experienced Database Architect 2 to lead enterprise-wide data architecture initiatives, with a strong focus on Master Data Management (MDM), Data Catalog, Data Governance, metadata, data lineage, and AI enablement. The ideal candidate will bridge data architecture, engineering, governance, and AI consumption, ensuring that enterprise data assets are high-quality, well-documented, discoverable, secure, and ready to support analytics, machine learning, and generative AI use cases. The candidate will help establish and maintain an enterprise Data Catalog/MDM solution, semantic layer, and data lineage capabilities while ensuring data quality and consistency across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Enterprise Data Architecture & Modeling
- Develop conceptual, logical, and physical data models across multiple business domains.
- Map data transformations, integrations, and dependencies across enterprise systems.
- Reverse-engineer legacy data structures and modernize existing architectures.
- Use ER/Studio and model automation to establish data modeling standards.
- Ensure alignment between architecture, engineering, and implementation.
- Develop and maintain enterprise taxonomies and ontologies.
- Apply semantic tagging to improve data discovery, trust, and reuse.
Data Governance, Metadata & Catalog
- Maintain and enhance enterprise data dictionaries.
- Automate metadata ingestion, scanning, and management processes.
- Implement data lineage, classification, and governance standards using platforms such as Microsoft Purview and Unity Catalog.
- Integrate the enterprise catalog with BI and ETL/ELT pipelines.
- Expand business glossary coverage in collaboration with data stewards.
- Develop and support catalog APIs for programmatic metadata queries and updates.
- Monitor metadata quality and establish relevant KPIs.
- Train business and technical users on data catalog and governance practices.
Data Strategy & AI Readiness
- Translate business requirements into structured data architecture, modeling, and metadata solutions.
- Support data readiness for analytics, AI/ML, and generative AI initiatives.
- Design and integrate semantic/context layers to support AI discovery and consumption.
- Prioritize data modeling and governance initiatives with product owners and stakeholders.
- Identify dependencies, risks, and opportunities and communicate status to stakeholders.
Team Enablement & Knowledge Transfer
- Facilitate enterprise data architecture and model reviews.
- Maintain architecture standards, templates, and documentation.
- Support data stewardship and governance activities across teams.
- Develop training materials and onboarding documentation.
- Promote consistent data architecture and governance practices across the enterprise.
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience working as an Enterprise Database Architect, including MDM/Data Catalog implementation.
- 4+ years of experience as a Data Modeler/DBA with Oracle and SQL Server.
- 4+ years of experience with enterprise Data Catalog platforms such as: Microsoft Purview, Collibra, Alation.
- 3+ years of experience with AI/ML technologies, including semantic/context layer design and integration.
- 3+ years of experience with AWS and Azure cloud technologies, including data platforms such as AWS Data Lake.
- 3+ years of experience with Data Governance, classification, and security.
- 2+ years of experience with data lineage, integration, and transformation tools such as Informatica or Fivetran.
- 2+ years of experience designing APIs for metadata harvesting, automation, and event-driven integration.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with vector databases and feature stores.
- Experience with Python scripting.
- Experience working with Texas State Government agencies.
- Experience using GitHub.
