Job Description

Summary

The Supervisor for Medical Support Assistants is located in the Outpatient Care Clinics and in support of the VHA Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) initiative. Provides support to Primary Care, Specialty Care and Mental Health Outpatient Clinics. The position is located at multiple sites within Eastern Colorado Health Care System: Denver, Aurora, Golden, Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Alamosa, Burlington, La Junta and Salida.

Duties

The Supervisory MSA at this level coordinates MSA staffing coverage for the Outpatient Care Clinics PACT team lets, Mental Health Service, and Specialty Services. Assignments at this level include, but are not limited to:

  • Assigning and evaluating the work of subordinate staff.
  • Resolving complex problems to ensure patient services are met.
  • Evaluate new products, equipment, and systems in order to make recommendations for improved operations.
  • Identifying educational or training needs.
  • Serves as a selecting official to fill FTE.
  • Evaluating performance, addresses performance & conduct issues, and takes disciplinary action when necessary.

The MSA Supervisor has full administrative and professional responsibility for planning and directing the MSA's activities. Responsible for extracting and analyzing data to provide reports in support of performance measures to senior management. Manage position responsibilities with little supervision as well as set priorities and deadlines adjusting the flow and sequencing of the work to meet team and patient needs.

Work Schedule

Permanent 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Pay

Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).

Paid Time Off

37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year). Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience.

Parental Leave

After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child Care Subsidy

After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

Retirement

Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA.

Insurance

Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement).

Telework

Basic Requirements

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Experience: None.
  • Education: High school diploma, General Education Development equivalency certificate, or proficiency certificate from a State or territorial-level Board or Department of Education.
  • English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).

Grade Determinations

Supervisor Medical Support Assistant, GS-8: One year of experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-7. In addition to the Basic Requirements defined above, the incumbent must demonstrate the following KSAs:

  • Experience: One year of creditable experience equivalent to the GS-7 level.
  • AND KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs): In addition to meeting the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
  • Ability to provide the full range of administrative and supervisory duties.
  • Ability to collaborate, communicate, and demonstrate customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to provide briefings, orientations, staff development, and training.
  • Ability to manage fiscal matters, forecast resource and equipment needs, and identify budget needs.
  • Advanced Knowledge of managing or leading patient support staff in a clinic.

Physical Requirements

The work performed is predominately clerical in nature and requires no special physical standards. The work is usually performed in an office setting, working with others and/or alone.
