Overview

The Director of Health Information Management (HIM) provides enterprise leadership over the medical record lifecycle and health information governance, including document scanning, indexing and quality controls, data integrity (chart corrections/amendments), patient portal request support (e.g., MyChart), and release of information (ROI). This leader is accountable for record availability, integrity, privacy, retention, and defensibility to support patient care, billing and appeals, audits, and legal requests - while advancing standardization, automation, analytics, and vendor strategy. The Director partners closely with Clinical leaders, Compliance/Privacy/Legal, Information Technology (IT), Revenue Cycle, and Coding/Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) to improve data quality, reduce operational friction, and manage risk.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Health Informatics, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or a related field required.

  • Master’s degree preferred.

Experience: Minimum of 7 years of progressive Health Information Management (HIM) experience required.

  • Minimum of 3 years of leadership experience in a manager-, director-, or other leadership-level role.
  • Experience in a complex hospital, health system, academic medical center, or multi-site healthcare environment preferred.

License/Certification/Registration: One of the following certifications is required:

  • RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator)
  • RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician)

Preferred certifications include:

  • CHPS (Certified in Healthcare Privacy and Security)
  • CHDA (Certified Health Data Analyst)
  • Other relevant HIM, privacy, informatics, or healthcare leadership certifications

Demonstrated expertise in:

  • Team leadership and talent development
  • Coaching, mentoring, and succession planning
  • Building high-performing teams

Proven ability to collaborate effectively with:
