Student engagement programming specialist - army stem

The Student Engagement Programming Specialist will play a critical role in the comprehensive administration and implementation of Army STEM Internships and Fellowships. RIT is the lead organization in the Army STEM Education Consortium (ASEC), a group of academic and non-profit organizations working together to administer a comprehensive portfolio of programming to attract, develop, and mentor the nation’s next-generation STEM workforce. Army STEM offers enrichment experiences, competitions, internships, fellowships, and professional development programs for students of all levels and their teachers. Army STEM Internships and Fellowships enable participants to do paid, hands-on research on real-world problems under the mentorship of Army scientists and engineers at Army-sponsored university labs and U.S. Army Laboratories and Research Centers nation-wide. Army STEM Internships are open to high school and undergraduate students, while graduate students and post-doctoral scientists and engineers are eligible for Army STEM Fellowships.

All essential duties and responsibilities of the Student Engagement Programming Specialist will support the implementation of all programming for Army STEM Internships and Fellowships with supervision and guidance from the program's Director. The Student Engagement Programming Specialist will engage regularly with participants and mentors, providing career-development enrichment and skill-building resources including administration of courses in the Army STEM Learning Management System (LMS). The ideal candidate will have significant STEM experience and comfort in engaging participants at all education levels. The Student Engagement Programming Specialist will become knowledgeable of all opportunities within the Army STEM portfolio. They will support recruitment events as well as special projects such as the annual abstract book, speaker series, the STEM Foundations program, implementation of new curriculums in the LMS, etc. Ultimately, the Student Engagement Programming Specialist will provide outreach, support, and engagement with Army STEM interns and fellows throughout and beyond their research experiences, maintaining connection as participants pursue STEM education and career pathways.

This is a Department of War (DoW) grant-funded position. Some travel required. Open to a remote, hybrid, or onsite work arrangement. Significant customer service experience and teaching experience preferred.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Maintains day-to-day operations for assigned program area, to include student engagement activities and event management. Ensures operations and activities adhere to grant guidelines.
• Serves as a mentor and advocate to participants and provides individualized advising and counseling services. Encourages participation in tutoring, program workshops, and other resources to facilitate student success and retention in the program.
• Performs outreach and meets regularly with participants to discuss needs, monitor progress, and assist with the resolution of academic and/or personal challenges.
• Develops an action plan for each fiscal year. Allocates funds for program activities and monitors budget expenditures for program grants to ensure fiscal responsibility. Manages the timely submission of financial reporting.
• Fosters and develops relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. Works collaboratively to develop and implement programs and resources focused on student retention and the elimination of achievement gaps.
• Represents the program on and off campus at professional activities and recruitment events. Oversees the internal and external marketing of the program through electronic and print communication, partnering with university communications staff to promote the visibility of the program.
• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in related field.
• 3 years of relevant experience.
• Equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered.

Job Level Overview

Specialized Contributor Level 2 - A fully functional role requiring established knowledge of the profession or field of work. Responsible for completing substantive assignments and projects. Problems are varied and non-routine, and resolution requires exercising judgment, analysis, advisement, creativity, and understanding broader sets of issues. May provide assistance to entry level staff.
