Job Description

Senior Tax Planner

High-net-worth tax strategy. Real client relationships. A seat at the advisory table.

Location: Remote, with monthly travel to the company's Midwest headquarters

Schedule: Full-time, Monday through Friday, standard business hours

Compensation: Base salary based on experience, plus an annual bonus based on company performance.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Most senior tax roles keep you focused primarily on returns and compliance. This opportunity places you directly in front of clients, working alongside financial advisors to shape proactive tax strategies and strengthen long-term client relationships. Our client is a well-established, high-touch financial planning firm specializing in retirement income, tax, and wealth-transfer strategy for high-net-worth clients. The Tax Planning Team works closely with the firm's Financial Advisors and Advisory Support Team, and tax planning is central to how the firm attracts, advises, and retains clients.

As Senior Tax Planner, you will be the tax voice in the room, helping prospective clients understand the value of proactive planning and leading annual planning conversations that give existing clients clear, thoughtful direction. If you are technically strong, enjoy people as much as projections, and want your work to visibly shape client outcomes, this role offers that opportunity.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Advise clients
  • Partner with the advisory team to create and present strategic tax planning solutions for high-net-worth clients, including individuals and business entities
  • Lead annual tax-planning reviews, using firm tools and systems to prepare recommendations tailored to each client's circumstances
  • Communicate clearly, concisely, and proactively with clients on tax-related matters
  • Build client confidence through sound technical judgment, responsiveness, reliability, and consistent follow-through
  • Support growth
  • Participate in prospect meetings alongside the advisory team, providing tax expertise and clearly communicating how proactive tax planning can strengthen a prospective client's overall financial strategy
  • Contribute to the firm's business development process by identifying tax-planning opportunities and helping prospective clients understand the value the firm can provide
  • Strengthen the practice
  • Support and guide research on complex tax matters and regulatory developments
  • Stay current on tax law changes and communicate relevant updates to the broader team
  • Use tax planning software and related tools effectively to support analysis, recommendations, and client presentations
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve processes, consistency, and the client experience

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE IN YEAR ONE

  • Advisors confidently include you in prospect meetings because your tax expertise adds meaningful value to the conversation
  • You independently lead annual tax-planning reviews, and clients leave with clear, tailored recommendations
  • Clients and colleagues rely on you for timely answers, met deadlines, and sound technical judgment
  • You identify practical ways to strengthen tax-planning processes and support the continued growth of the practice

WHAT YOU BRING

Required:

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Enrolled Agent (EA) credential
  • Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®) designation
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 8-10+ years of tax planning and preparation experience, including hands-on tax return filing, tax plan calculation, and compliance experience
  • Experience providing client-centered tax consulting to high-net-worth individuals (including business entities)
  • Strong research capabilities involving complex technical tax matters and regulatory changes, supported by very strong Excel skills
  • Highly effective interpersonal, relationship-management, and communication skills, with a polished, professional client presence
  • Excellent organization, time management, and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment

Preferred:

  • Experience with Holistiplan and Income Lab
  • Experience with eMoney
  • Experience contributing to business development efforts, including prospect meetings and conversations that demonstrate the value of proactive tax planning

GROWTH OPPORTUNITY

This role offers strong growth potential as the firm continues to expand its capabilities. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to broaden their influence, help shape the future of the practice, and potentially assume greater leadership responsibility over time.

WHERE AND HOW YOU WILL WORK

This is a fully remote role with travel to the company’s Midwest headquarters approximately one week per month. Local candidates may opt to work from the firm's office, although this is not required. Standard business hours apply, Monday through Friday; occasional later hours may be needed to accommodate client and prospect schedules.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Competitive base salary, based on experience Annual bonus based on company performance Company-paid individual health coverage 401(k) plan with a 3% company match Paid time off and paid holidays
