Job Description

Role - Senior Data Modeler
Location - Remote USA
Employment type - Fulltime

Job Overview:

Key responsibilities include:

• Work with data stewards to capture and certify data definitions.
• Map data assets across Finance, Commercial, HR, and Marketing, including tables, fields, and metrics requiring business definitions.
• Improve the existing Excel/Python-based intake process and explore opportunities to systemize it.
• Facilitate definition workshops with domain owners.
• Recommend business definitions, including descriptions, owners, related terms, and calculation logic.
• Follow up with stakeholders to maintain progress across domains.
• Help resolve cross-domain terminology conflicts.
• Clean and validate inputs before uploading them to Unity Catalog.
• Upload approved definitions and verify their accuracy and discoverability.
• Establish a lightweight governance process to keep definitions current.
• Document the end-of-the-end process for team handoff.

Business Metadata & Data Definition Management

Partner with Data Stewards and Business Owners to capture, validate, and certify business definitions.

• Document business terms, metrics, KPIs, and critical data elements within Unity Catalog.
• Maintain a centralized business glossary and metadata repository.
• Ensure business definitions are aligned with organizational standards and governance requirements.

Data Asset Discovery & Mapping

Identify and catalog data assets across Finance, Commercial, HR, Marketing, and other business domains.

• Map business terminology to physical data assets, including Tables Columns/Fields Reports Dashboards KPIs and Metrics.
• Analyze relationships between data assets and business concepts.

Definition Workshops & Stakeholder Collaboration

Facilitate workshops with business stakeholders and domain experts.

• Gather requirements and business context for data definitions.
• Drive consensus on standardized terminology across domains. Resolve conflicts arising from differing business definitions and interpretations.

Business Glossary & Governance

Recommend and document:

• Business definitions
• Metric descriptions
• Calculation formulas
• Data ownership assignments
• Stewardship responsibilities
• Related business terms

Establish governance standards for metadata creation and maintenance.

• Define approval and certification workflows for business definitions.

Process Improvement & Automation

Assess and enhance existing Excel-based and Python-based Metadata intake processes.

• Identify opportunities to automate metadata collection, validation, and approval workflows.
• Recommend scalable solutions for metadata management and governance.

Data Quality & Validation

Review and validate metadata submissions for completeness and accuracy.

• Ensure consistency in terminology, descriptions, and ownership information.
• Perform quality checks prior to publishing metadata in Unity Catalog.
• Support ongoing metadata audits and remediation activities.

Unity Catalog Administration

Support Upload approved business definitions into Unity Catalog.

• Verify searchability, discoverability, and usability of metadata.
• Ensure definitions are properly linked to business and technical assets.
• Support Metadata Lifecycle Management Activities.

Governance Process Documentation

Establish lightweight governance processes to maintain current and accurate business definitions.

• Create user guides, SOPs, and process documentation.
• Document intake, approval, certification, maintenance, and review procedures.
• Prepare handover documentation and train operational teams.

Qualifications

Must have skills:

• Minimum 7 years of experience.
• Data Stewardship, Databricks, Databricks Data Governance, Unity Catalog

Good to have skills:

• Python (Strong)
