About the Position

The Prince George's County Department of Public Works & Transportation (DPW&T) is currently seeking a highly qualified applicant to fill a Senior Executive position in the Office of the Director.

About The Agency

The Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) is responsible for nearly 2,000 miles of County-maintained roadways that range from rural to urban classifications. The transportation infrastructure includes 900 bridges, as well as shoulders, sidewalks, curbs/gutters, stormwater management facilities, driveway aprons and nearly 3,000 acres of grassy area -- all of which are maintained by staff of the Department.

Examples of Work

  • Represents the County in negotiations with other agencies, utilities, groups and individuals on a wide variety of issues pertinent to public works.
  • Oversees all financial aspects of the department, including preparing annual budget requests and reviewing compensation and fringe benefits annually.
  • Establishes, in accordance with County policy, appropriate service and staffing levels and monitors and evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures.
  • Develops and retains highly competent, customer service-oriented staff.
  • Maintains effective relations with other governmental officials, community leaders, citizens, news media representatives, etc.
  • Applies a comprehensive understanding of public works operations to strategic planning, complex problem solving, and diverse service delivery.
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to addressing the needs of diverse and underserved communities.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree and at least 7 years of progressively responsible public works experience including at least 7 years of experience at the supervisory and management level. Excellent writing, verbal, human relations, leadership and management skills are required. In addition, this position requires broad-based financial management/budgeting skills to manage the cost containment and conduct the financial projections of a complex operating budget.
