The Registered Nurse supports this mission by providing safe, compassionate, evidence-based nursing care; performing patient assessment and triage; supporting physicians and clinical staff; educating patients; coordinating care; and helping the Health Center deliver accessible, high-quality, and cost-effective services. The Registered Nurse works with patients across the lifespan, including newborns, children, young adults, adults, and older adults.
Education and work experience: Must possess a current Registered Nurse license in the State of Hawaii and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. Three years of acute nursing experience is required. Experience in medical-surgical nursing, family practice, ambulatory care, pediatrics, women’s health, or college health is particularly valuable. Demonstrated experience in patient assessment, telephone triage, immunizations, chronic disease management, patient education, office procedures, point-of-care testing, electronic medical records, and medication administration is highly preferred.
Skill Set: Strong patient assessment, triage, clinical judgment, prioritization, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Knowledge of nursing procedures, medical terminology, medications, immunizations and immunization schedules, infection prevention, OSHA and CLIA requirements, and outpatient clinical workflows. Proficient computer skills, including electronic medical records, electronic mail, Microsoft Word, Excel, and other office and clinical systems. Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational, leadership, teaching, and interpersonal skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality, work effectively with patients and families from diverse backgrounds, remain calm in a busy clinic, and communicate in another language is helpful.
License or Certification: Current, unrestricted Hawaii Registered Nurse license; current Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification; current continuing education necessary to maintain licensure and clinical competency. Certification by the Hawaii State Department of Health to administer and read PPD skin tests is preferred or must be obtained when required by the position.

Regular clinic hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a one-hour lunch period to be taken between 12:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. The Registered Nurse may need to work before 8:00 a.m. or after 5:00 p.m. as warranted and may be assigned after-hours telephone triage, emergency response, or other coverage consistent with Health Center operations.
The Registered Nurse is expected to participate in mandatory University and Health Center training programs, including regulatory, compliance, safety, blood-borne pathogen, OSHA, CLIA, emergency response, and electronic medical record training. The Registered Nurse maintains clinical competency through continuing education, professional development, current nursing literature, and approved educational activities. Performance evaluations will be conducted annually by the Director and will include assessment of clinical quality, patient safety, documentation, patient education, teamwork, professionalism, competency, compliance with university policies, and stewardship of Health Center resources.
All activities must comply with applicable federal and State of Hawaii laws and regulations governing the practice of nursing, including HIPAA, OSHA, CLIA, blood-borne pathogen standards, communicable-disease requirements, and professional standards of care. Employees are expected to support and comply with university policies, including the BYU-Hawaii Honor Code and the values and standards of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Work is performed primarily indoors in a pleasant yet challenging outpatient Health Center. The Registered Nurse routinely provides care for patients with acute illnesses, injuries, chronic medical conditions, and preventive-care needs and may be exposed to communicable diseases, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous medications, chemicals, medical sharps, infectious waste, and biological materials. Patient volume and acuity may fluctuate throughout the day. The Registered Nurse must demonstrate flexibility, sound clinical judgment, and the ability to respond effectively to changing priorities and urgent medical situations.
The Registered Nurse must be able to safely perform the physical demands of an outpatient nursing practice, including standing and walking for extended periods; frequent bending, reaching, twisting, squatting, and kneeling; manual dexterity sufficient to perform examinations, injections, venipunctures, IV therapy, and other nursing procedures; visual acuity necessary for patient assessment and testing; lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling supplies, equipment, babies, and small children up to 40 pounds; responding appropriately in emergencies; performing multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy and patient safety; and working safely in an environment with potential exposure to infectious diseases, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous medications, chemicals, and medical equipment. Ability to deal effectively with stress is required. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
