The Office of the Attorney General has an opening for a Paralegal in the Environment, Health and Human Services Division for the Health and Human Services section. In accordance with the ABA Rules of Professional Conduct, Paralegals may perform minor legal tasks which would otherwise be performed by an attorney. Projects are complex in nature and may involve large quantities of documents, including electronically stored information and data. The Paralegal should have sufficient direct legal experience to be given moderate independence in planning and completing their assignments.
The Paralegal will conduct legal research; compile and organize information obtained from the client; review and manage case files and be responsible for maintaining document control and management; search public and private records; draft routine legal documents; and assist attorneys in preparing and formatting electronic pleadings, motions and other documents for filing in state and federal courts and other forums. The Paralegal will also assist attorneys in case preparation to include preparing documents for trial or a hearing, and assisting attorneys in locating, obtaining, tracking and disseminating information and evidence. The Paralegal will be expected to produce quality work product, occasionally under tight deadlines, and work in a team environment.
The Division consists of two sections: The Environment Section, supporting the Department of Environmental Quality ("DEQ"), and the Health and Human Services Section, supporting the Department of Health and Human Services ("DHHS"). Depending on the Division's needs, the successful applicant may support either section.
The Environment Section supports DEQ in performing its mission as an independent regulatory agency engaged in permitting, enforcement, rulemaking, and related activities. In addition to public records, attorneys work on a wide range of administrative, judicial, and other regulatory proceedings, including rulemaking.
Similarly, the Health and Human Services Section works on a wide range of administrative, regulatory, and judicial proceedings for DHHS. Following the consolidations of the former Departments of Health and Human Services, the section provides counsel across Medicaid hearings, licensing matters, and enforcement actions affecting some of the state's most essential public programs.
