Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Verifies routine results and quality control data for accuracy and reliability using prescribed guidelines.
  • Performs, evaluates, and documents all quality control, preventive maintenance and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Receives guidance and direction from more experienced team members or lead.
  • Maintains current Florida license as a Medical Technologist in the specialty or specialties required by the laboratory section(s) assigned.
  • National Certification such as American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB), or American Medical Technologists (AMT) preferred.
  • Demonstrates computer system proficiency including ordering, resulting, and inquiry functions.
  • Ensures proper utilization and preparation of reagents and supplies.
  • Communicates critical results to the patient caregiver. Regularly reports all unusual findings to the immediate supervisor.
  • Regularly reports work activities and pending work to the oncoming technologist.
  • Responds to work related technical inquiries as needed.
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Baptist Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards.
  • Maintains compliance with all Baptist Health policies and procedures.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Other Related Functions

  • Performs specimen collection procedures, specimen receiving and processing as required.
  • Answers the telephone and greets guests to the department.
  • Maintains current job knowledge in order to effectively instruct students or other personnel.
  • Responsible for an active role in the laboratory quality improvement program.
  • Follows the established policies and procedures to meet regulatory and accrediting agency requirements.
  • Practices infection control and safety practices and keeps a clean and organized work area.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient records, hospital and departmental matters at all times.

Qualifications

Education/Training

Bachelor’s degree required. Completion of an accredited medical laboratory scientist program.

Licensure/Certification

  • National Certification as American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB), or American Medical Technologists (AMT), or equivalent, or eligible for board certification required. Certification required within 6 months from hire.
