IT SYSTEMS ENGINEER

The System Engineer (SE) is responsible for effectively provisioning, installing/configuring, operating, and maintaining system hardware, software, and related infrastructure. This individual participates in technical research and development to support ongoing infrastructure innovation. This individual ensures system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures align with organizational values, enabling staff, volunteers, and partners to use available resources.

This individual will work as a team member supporting various systems, including but not limited to PACS, email, EMR, and database infrastructure. This position includes an on-call rotation and requires working some evenings/weekends, sometimes with little advance notice. The position also administers Microsoft 365, Entra ID, virtualization, cybersecurity controls, cloud services, disaster recovery processes, and healthcare technology systems.

Excellent customer service skills in healthcare ensure patient satisfaction, build trust, enhance communication, and contribute to a positive experience.

This is a non-exempt, full-time, year-round position. Anticipated Schedule: Monday - Friday. Hours are typically 8 AM to 5 PM, and some flexibility is needed to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and extended hours. On-call shifts are also required.

Starting pay range: $36.45 - $51.91/hour, DOE and certs.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Engineering and Provisioning

• Engineering of SE-related solutions for various project and operational needs.
• Install new / rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc., in line with standards and project/operational requirements.
• Install and configure systems, including EMR infrastructure applications.
• Administer Microsoft 365 services including Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, Entra ID, MFA, and Conditional Access.
• Maintain VMware virtualization infrastructure, storage systems, and related disaster recovery technologies.
• Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures.
• Contribute to and maintain system standards.
• Research and recommend innovative and automated approaches for system administration tasks. Identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale.

Operations and Support

• Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems, and critical processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
• Perform regular security monitoring to identify potential intrusions.
• Monitor endpoint security platforms, vulnerability management tools, and cybersecurity dashboards. Participate in cybersecurity incident response, investigation, remediation, and documentation activities.
• Perform daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media. Also ensure the reliability of offsite data storage. Perform regular file archiving and purging as needed.
• Create, modify, and deactivate user accounts as requested.
• Provide Tier 2 and above support per requests from various individuals/departments. Investigate and troubleshoot issues.
• Repair and recover from hardware or software failures. Coordinate and communicate with impacted departments.

Maintenance

• Apply OS patches and upgrades regularly, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configure/add new services as necessary.
• Upgrade and configure system software that supports infrastructure applications.
• Maintain operational, configuration, or other procedures.
• Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning.
• Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required. Configure CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required.
• Maintain data center environmental and monitoring equipment.
• Must be able to troubleshoot and maintain desktops, network, and peripherals, such as printers, scanners, etc.
• Create, coordinate, and present IT-related educational events for non-IT staff.
• Provide support for audio-visual systems, including telemedicine.
• Participates in call schedule rotation.
• Other responsibilities as assigned.

• Ability to work with a broad spectrum of users, solving problems of varied complexity under various stress levels while maintaining composure and high-level customer support.

Minimum requirements:

• Bachelor's (4-year) degree, with a technical major in engineering or computer science, or equivalent work experience.
• Microsoft 365 administration experience required. Experience with VMware, cybersecurity tools, backup systems, Active Directory, and cloud technologies preferred.
• Understanding VMware, Windows Server OS, and Linux is necessary.
• The position involves various issues and requires troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Discretion in decision-making. Decisions typically have a noticeable departmental and/or enterprise-wide impact; judgment errors can cause significant downtime, revenue loss, and interruptions to patient care. Confidentiality: Must maintain HIPAA privacy standards at all times.
• Must be able to interpret and/or discuss technical information with others, including terminology or concepts unfamiliar to many people.
• Must be able to provide advice and recommendations involving complex issues regularly. Has the latitude to resolve problems within established practices.
• Good customer service skills are essential.
