Job Description

The Pathology Department is seeking a part-time Histotechnologist II to perform various routine and complex laboratory tests in accordance with established standards and procedures. Performs technical and high complexity procedures on clinical and research specimens in a histology laboratory.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform the day-to-day technical procedures on clinical and research specimens.
  • Prepare tissue samples for microscopic examination by a pathologist or investigator.
  • Perform grossing/dissection of small specimens using skills and knowledge of animal and human anatomy and morphology.
  • Accession and bill projects.
  • Programs tissue processors and slide stainer.
  • Perform routine histology on human and animal specimens: use special stain techniques; embed specimens; prepare various staining solutions; decalcification and staining of bone specimens, operate automated slide and cassette printer, load tissue processors, and automated slide cover slipper. Handle wet tissue and frozen tissue sectioning.
  • Perform quality assurance procedures, evaluate sections as they are being sectioned and assess stain and tissue quality after staining. Report discrepancies and initiate remediation per standard operating procedure.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot equipment, do routine repairs or notify service personnel when more complex problems occur.
  • Perform related general duties, changing solutions on slide stainer and tissue processors.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records.
  • Provide accurate information on work completed to ensure proper billing.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree from an accredited histotechnology certification program.
  • Two years of laboratory experience that includes some histology experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
