About the Role
The W93 Systems Development and Realization group is looking for an experienced mechanical designer to join the team as a checker of design definition. The position requires a range of expertise in 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD), hardware design, fabrication, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), and engineering concepts. You may also be expected to guide teams of staff from diverse backgrounds through design iterations to address potential engineering defects. Completed work is reviewed with the expectation of expert results without appreciable direction. You will work on technical solutions to complex and unique problems that call for ingenuity, creativity, and independence, and your solutions will frequently be original and affect the outcome of the entire project. You may be asked to mentor junior staff on Models Based Definition and GD&T.
This is an opportunity to be part of the first new weapon system program in over 30 years. The Q-20 W93/Mk7 Systems Development and Realization Group defines, develops, and fields the warhead system for the newest Navy submarine launched ballistic missile weapon program. The group supports the DoD/Navy SSP and DOE/NNSA customers in defining the mission need and the corresponding technical and programmatic requirements. The W93 program collaborates closely with Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and Lockheed Martin Space design agencies to develop the re-entry system, ensuring safe, secure, and reliable warhead performance and a relevant nuclear deterrent. Q-20 also integrates the production agency teams (KCNSC, Pantex, SRS, Y-12, LANL, and SNL) tightly into the design, qualification, and realization processes.
The program is fast moving and still in the early stages of design, so these hires will be very busy updating product and design definitions. The team is looking for someone comfortable creating order out of chaos, working to quick deadlines across many moving parts.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as checker of design definition, reviewing models and drawings for form, fit, and function and for Models Based Definition (MBD)
- Conduct tolerance and stack analyses and verify compliance with the most recent design standards
- Review product definition for producibility to meet requirements and reduce rejected products
- Guide teams of staff from diverse backgrounds through design iterations to address potential engineering defects
- Lead reviews for design, manufacture, assembly, and test
- Recommend MBD best practices and methods of improvement while maintaining compliance with NNSA, LANL, and industry standards
- Support weapon system configuration management workflows for authorization, review, release, and distribution of models, drawings, specifications, and related product definition
- Mentor junior staff on Models Based Definition and GD&T
- Work on multiple tasks for a variety of customers, supporting teams of engineers, physicists, scientists, technologists, and technicians
Required Qualifications
- Advanced understanding of mechanical CAD, with experience in mechanical computer aided design, manufacturing, inspection, assembly, and testing
- Experience checking CAD models and drawings for form, fit, and function and Models Based Definition (MBD), with Creo preferred
