Job Description

The Director - Accounting is responsible for ensuring compliance within multiple accounting functions throughout the Company’s retail locations, distribution centers and manufacturing operations. This role ensures data integrity in Company accounting systems and decision support systems used for business reporting, planning and analysis, and develops and prepares managerial reports and analyses for cross-functional users in support of business objectives.

Major Activities

  • Lead and direct multiple accounting functions for Michaels Stores, Inc., including the development and maintenance of policies, procedures and controls to ensure accurate and timely monthly financial reporting for Michaels' retail and distribution center locations, and Artistree manufacturing operations.
  • Direct cross-functional project teams to capture business improvement processes and metrics, data analysis, and leadership reports.
  • Continuously monitor departmental processes against industry best practices and identify/implement productivity and control enhancements.
  • Analyze proposed business and process changes; identify and clearly articulate the impact and risks to the Company's inventory value related to those initiatives and work closely with teams to mitigate those risks.
  • Ensure development of multiple accounting teams; build skill sets and ensure adequate cross-training and succession planning for manager positions.
  • Identify and champion business and process changes to drive improvements in the quality of reported data and drive organizational efficiencies.
  • Continuously monitor departmental processes against industry best practices; identify and implement productivity and control enhancements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent experience.

Minimum Special Certifications or technical skills

Advanced Excel skills.

Minimum Type of experience the job requires

10+ years of related experience, 5+ years of supervisory experience, Previous experience with inventory accounting in a retail environment.

Preferred Education

BS in Accounting or Finance.

Preferred Special Certifications or technical skills

Certified Public Accountant.

Preferred Type of experience the job requires

Experience in cost accounting.
