Job Description

Bring your experience. Find your people. Build what matters.

At Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC), we believe great work happens when talented people have the trust, resources, and support to do their best work.

As an Administrative Assistant I, you’ll bring your experience to meaningful projects that shape the communities we serve. You’ll have the opportunity to serve as one of the main supports for your assigned GMC office, collaborate with talented professionals across disciplines, and build strong relationships with clients, consultants, and contractors.

Most importantly, you won’t be expected to do it alone. You’ll be surrounded by a multidisciplinary team that values collaboration, shares knowledge, and is invested in your success.

What You’ll Do

As an Administrative Assistant I, you’ll serve as the trusted first person that employees, visitors, and potential or current clients see.

You’ll:

  • Schedule and organize complex activities such as meetings, travel, conferences and department activities for all members of the department
  • Type and design general correspondences, memos, charts, tables, graphs, business plans, etc.
  • Proofread copy for spelling grammar and layout, making appropriate changes
  • Be responsible for accuracy and clarity of final copy
  • Answer and forward phone calls
  • Screen phone calls as needed
  • Arrange couriers
  • Handle addendums

We’ll Support Your Growth

We’re looking for an entry level Administrative Assistant I who is ready to make an impact in GMC Charleston.

It’s about sharing what you know, learning from others, and helping the entire team succeed.

In this role, you’ll have opportunities to:

  • Work effectively and efficiently with office leadership to support the office’s needs
  • Schedule social events and luncheons
  • Sort and distribute mail
  • Perform other duties as office needs dictate

The Kind of Team Member We’re Looking For

You’re an entry level Administrative Assistant I who enjoys both the work and the people behind the work.

You bring:

  • A commitment to quality and thoughtful problem-solving
  • A collaborative mindset and willingness to share your experience with others
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills
  • A desire to contribute to something bigger than an individual project

What You’ll Need

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferred
  • 0-3 years’ experience in office supportive role, preferred
  • To be detail-oriented and professional
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Extreme Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Basic understanding of office equipment
  • Basic understanding of clerical procedures and systems such as recordkeeping and filing
  • The ability to work independently and reliably

Where You’ll Work

This is primarily an office-based role, with opportunities to get out into the field and stay connected to the projects and people you’re serving. GMC Charleston is centrally located in downtown Charleston and has a collaborative open office environment.

Travel: None expected; subject to change if business needs dictate

The role also includes prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. It includes movements such as bending, twisting, crouching, etc. You must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.

Why GMC?

At GMC, we believe communities are built by people—not companies. We’re one of the Southeast’s largest privately held architecture and engineering firms, but our size isn’t what defines us. Our people do.

We bring architects, designers, engineers, planners, environmental professionals, surveyors, and disaster recovery experts together to solve complex challenges and create better outcomes for the communities we serve. Our work touches everyday life—from schools, parks, hospitals, and commercial developments to clean water, safe streets, resilient environments, and everything in between.

And while the work matters, how we work matters just as much.

We’re guided by four values:

  • Quality — We care deeply about the work we put into the world.
  • Integrity — We do the right thing for our clients, colleagues, and communities.
  • Creativity — We believe the best solutions come from curiosity, collaboration, and fresh thinking.
  • Care — We invest in our people, our clients, and the places we’re fortunate to serve.

At GMC, your experience has a place, your ideas have a voice, and your leadership can make a difference. Come build something meaningful with us.

GMC is an Equal Opportunity Employer, including individuals with disabilities and veterans.
