Ahafo South is Ghana’s largest gold mine and Newmont’s flagship operation in Africa. Commercial production began in 2006, and the site has produced more than 10 million ounces of gold. Your Impact:

Provide geotechnical engineering support for underground mining and project development activities through rock mass characterization, geotechnical investigations, design, monitoring, risk assessment, and ground control governance to ensure safe, sustainable, and cost-effective project execution and mining operations.

As Part Of Our Team You Will:

• Conduct underground geotechnical inspections and rock mass characterization to assess ground conditions, structural geology, and excavation stability for development headings, stopes, and infrastructure.
• Design, review, and optimize ground support systems including rock bolts, cable bolts, shotcrete, mesh, and steel sets tailored to site-specific geology, stress conditions, and mining methods.
• Oversee the installation, maintenance, and quality assurance of ground support elements, ensuring compliance with design specifications and safety standards.
• Execute rock mass testing and geotechnical investigations using mapping, core logging, laboratory testing, and in-situ stress measurements to establish design parameters.
• Develop and maintain geotechnical monitoring systems including convergence stations, extensometers, and micro seismic monitoring to track excavation performance and identify instability.
• Support the implementation of Ground Control Management Plans (GCMP), Ground Support Management Plans (GSMP), Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs), and geotechnical risk registers.
• Analyze geotechnical data and prepare technical reports, design recommendations, and risk assessments to support mine planning and operational decisions.
• Collaborate with mine planning, production, and engineering teams to optimize excavation sequences, stope geometries, and development layouts based on geotechnical constraints.
• Identify, assess, and manage geotechnical hazards including rockfalls, seismicity, stress-induced failures, squeezing ground, water-related instability, and ground support degradation.
• Ensure critical controls remain effective and are routinely verified.
• Conduct geotechnical audits, inspections, peer reviews, and compliance assessments.
• Manage technical interfaces with geotechnical consultants, drilling contractors, monitoring specialists, and construction contractors.
• Ensure all geotechnical activities comply with company standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.

Your Training, Skills & Experience Checklist:

Formal Qualification (including Professional Registrations):

• Bachelor's degree in Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field.

Experience:

• Minimum 3 years of underground geotechnical engineering experience.

Additional Knowledge:

• Understanding of rock mechanics principles, structural geology, and ground behavior; Knowledge of ground support systems, installation methods, and performance characteristics.
• Familiarity with geotechnical investigation techniques including mapping, logging, and testing.
• Practical problem-solving ability in dynamic underground mining conditions.

Technical Skills:

• Rock mechanics and structural geology.
• Ground support design and optimization.
• Ground control management.
• Underground excavation stability assessment.
• Rock mass classification systems (RMR, Q-System, GSI).
• Geotechnical investigation and laboratory testing.
• Geotechnical monitoring systems and data interpretation.
• Numerical modelling and analysis (using Geotech software such as Dips, RS3, MAP3D, FLAC3D, etc.)
• Technical report writing and engineering documentation.
• Risk assessment and critical controls management.
• Underground mining methods and mine planning principles.

The location for this position is in Apensu Underground at our Ahafo South mine site.
