Job Description

About the team:

In which department/team will the VIE be integrated? The VIE will join either the Operations team or the new Performance & Continuous Improvement function at Keolis Hunter, the private operator of buses, tram (light rail) and ferries in Greater Newcastle (NSW), under contract with Transport for NSW (TfNSW). The exact assignment will depend on the selected profile and current priorities.

What are the team’s main challenges?

  • Securing and exploiting operational data (punctuality, regularity, load, incidents) across several modes (bus, tram, ferry) to manage contractual performance with TfNSW.
  • Building robust dashboards and KPIs from heterogeneous data systems (GPS/AVL, schedules, customer complaints).
  • Identifying continuous improvement levers (congestion hotspots, service regularity, service delivery rate) in a context of contract renewal and public scrutiny of operator performance.
  • Professionalising a Performance & Continuous Improvement function that is still relatively new within the company.

Team description and member roles:

  • Operations Director (Ops Director): oversees day-to-day bus/tram/ferry operations, manages driving staff and depots.
  • Performance Manager: leads the performance and continuous improvement approach, acts as the interface with TfNSW on contractual KPIs.
  • Support teams: service planning, quality control, customer relations.

The VIE will work directly with these managers to turn raw data into actionable analyses.

  • Desired experience: Initial experience in data analysis, business intelligence or continuous improvement — internships, apprenticeships, or first job(s) for candidates who already have professional experience (as the VIE can be held up to age 28, experience beyond internships is welcome); an interest in the transport/mobility sector is a plus but not mandatory.
  • Technical skills: SQL, advanced Excel, Power BI or equivalent; basic knowledge of Python/R appreciated; ability to structure and secure data from multiple sources.
  • Tools/software used in the role: SQL, Python, Power BI, advanced Excel.
  • Other information: Autonomy, strong analytical rigor, good interpersonal skills to work with field operations teams (drivers, depot managers); ability to make data results accessible to non-technical audiences.
