The Japanese energy markets are constantly evolving as part of the broader energy and financial landscape. This transformation is reshaping market participants, creating opportunities, and introducing new participation dynamics. Bp's European APac Power & Carbon (EAPC) Trading business sits at the forefront of bp’s group strategy. Originating from bp’s Supply, Trading & Shipping (ST&S) segment, its goal is to build a sustainable, profitable, and well-balanced power and carbon portfolio across target markets.
Origination is critical to delivering this strategy and driving growth in the Japanese business. This leadership role will lead a diverse, agile and high-performing team focused on structuring and delivering power and energy transactions.
The Manager Japan Power Origination will report to the VP, European APac Power & Carbon Trading and be an instrumental part of the global EAPC Leadership Team. The individual will be responsible for developing opportunities, advancing value creation, and completing deals aligned with risk, value, and strategic objectives. The role will require flexibility to adapt to changing environments, market needs, and customer demands. Clear accountability for P&L, risk management, controls, and delivery against defined performance metrics is expected.
What You Will Deliver
- Lead Japanese power origination activity applying the foundational bp trading platform to deploy risk and create strong risk adjusted margin across our targeted commercial segments – e.g. offtake and consumer PPAs, mid-term transactions and evolving technologies.
- Drive all commercial and flexibility pursuits – e.g. PPAs, shaped products, thermal and battery (capital light approach) route to market, tolls and collocation activity.
- Accountable for delivering on Japan’s power pnl targets whilst working tightly with the AsPac power and carbon Trading team to access alternate forms of market liquidity, products, risk and delivery.
- Deploy innovative commercial structures to optimally enable the bench to take shape and baseload risk for premium customer power sales through asset delivery – largely in line with evolving Japan’s DC and load build out.
- Drive optimal risk management in line with the Trading teams risk appetite.
- Manage geographically diverse team of originators and analysts, fostering a culture of respect and people development, direct performance and in the moment feedback while seeking an increase in commercial/financial/risk management acuity and capability across the team.
- Provide strong in country and regional leadership across the ST&S community.
- Cultivate external partnerships in line with business drivers and pursuits to enable effective and outsized delivery.
- Contributing member of the EAPC Leadership Team supporting decision making, resource prioritization, optimization and build out of the whole business.
- Partner with other teams across bp and ST&S (LNG, RPT, Downstream Fuels, etc.) to deliver distinctive value in cross business and fuels linked opportunities.
- Collaborate with all internal collaborators and assurance groups including Tax, Legal, Finance, Regulatory, Risk, Structuring, Trading, Compliance and Credit to ensure compliance and optimal structures deployed.
- Ensure all origination and commercial activities are handled in a compliant manner and conducted in accordance with bp Code of Conduct and ST&S Operating Standards.
What You Will Need to Be Successful
- Formal qualifications constituting university degrees, examination certificates that confirm a level of educational attainment or licenses.
- Membership of a technical or professional body that has confirmed an individual has reached a level of capability within a technical or professional field (usually but not necessarily obtained through examinations) or Formal certification that they can undertake specialist work or processes e.g. PMI.
- Significant experience in a commercial trading and marketing environment with demonstrable experience of taking opportunities from discovery to deal closure (full deal lifecycle), extracting commercial value from projects/deals, applying commercial judgment around appropriate risk/reward, finding the most economical solutions and deploying deep negotiation skills.
- Experience in influencing a range of senior and executive level stakeholders, both internally and externally with a bias towards empowering the team.
- Excellent presentation, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent teammate, able to build and maintain a network of contacts internally & externally and ability to empower a diverse community and set of stakeholders to deliver optimal commercial solutions.
- Clear communication skills and ability to quantify and articulate insights across a diverse group and extract the best from their teams.
- Consistent record of working collaboratively across multiple teams to deliver complex deals and commercial results.
- Clear ability to adhere to and excel in high control and compliance environment with strong commitment to compliance and encouraging a culture of compliance across their team.
- Ability to thrive in both collaborative and autonomous environments with the ability to receive and provide respectful challenge.

- English and Japanese fluency.

Key Technical Competencies
- Deep structured finance acumen with good understanding of financial options, modelling, market, credit, financial and operational risks inherent in sophisticated transactions.
- Sound understanding of existing Japanese gas and power infrastructure and global market fundamentals.
- Good knowledge of Japanese and broader APac gas and power markets, regulatory happenings/opportunities and competitor environment – ability to use this knowledge to handle risks and find opportunities.
- Strong experience in structured products, creative energy solutions and risk management techniques deployed to lead and effectuate transactions.
- Demonstrated track record in both upstream and downstream gas, power and energy markets.
