Job Description

Company Description

About Redcare Pharmacy:

As Europe’s No.1 e-pharmacy Redcare Pharmacy is powered by passionate teams and cutting-edge innovation. We strive to create a healthy collaborative work environment where every employee feels valued and inspired to contribute to our vision “Until every human has their health”. If you’re seeking a career that offers purpose and aligns with your values join us and start your #Redcareer today.

About the role:

As a Staff Software Engineer within our Retail – Transaction domain, you’ll take technical leadership across two engineering teams responsible for one of the most critical customer journeys at Redcare Pharmacy. Combining deep hands-on engineering with Staff-level influence, you’ll shape how our checkout capabilities evolve across web, backend and, increasingly, native mobile experiences while creating technical alignment across connected areas such as payments, orders and shipping.

This is an opportunity to influence beyond individual features or a single codebase: you’ll help set architectural direction, raise engineering standards and turn complex business and technical challenges into scalable solutions used by millions of customers across Europe.

About the tech stack:

React.js, Next.js, Java, Spring Boot, SwiftUI, Swift, Kotlin, Android SDK, ES6, ESI, Varnish, Docker, Google Cloud, Kubernetes.

While this is a remote position based in Germany, it may require occasional on-site collaboration at our offices in Berlin or Cologne, depending on business and team requirements.

Job Description

About your tasks:

  • Shape architecture across the Transaction domain: Provide technical direction across two engineering teams and connected domains, designing scalable distributed solutions across frontend and backend. You’ll facilitate complex architectural decisions and make pragmatic, data-driven trade-offs around performance, security, reliability, maintainability and cost, while identifying risks that extend beyond an individual team.
  • Build the next generation of Transaction: Remain hands-on across frontend and backend, shaping customer-facing experiences with React and scalable backend capabilities with Java. You’ll influence solutions from early discovery and system design through implementation and production, while helping establish the foundations for future native iOS and Android checkout experiences.
  • Raise engineering standards beyond one team: Drive the adoption of architecture, performance, security, testing, observability and reliability practices. Work with engineering leads and specialist teams to turn recurring technical challenges into reusable patterns, guidelines and platform capabilities rather than solving them locally.
  • Lead complex initiatives through influence: Create alignment between Checkout, Payments, Orders, Shipping and other dependent teams where ownership and technical priorities cross boundaries. Mentor engineers, facilitate architecture and design discussions and provide technical direction without relying on formal authority, enabling teams to make stronger decisions independently.
  • Connect technology, customers and business impact: Partner with Product, UX and engineering leadership to identify opportunities, challenge assumptions and translate business needs into sustainable technical strategy. Use data, metrics and industry trends to evaluate trade-offs, prioritise high-impact investments and determine when to evolve existing capabilities versus introduce new technologies or approaches.

Qualifications

About you:

You bring deep, hands-on Full Stack engineering expertise with React and Java, and you’re comfortable taking production ownership across customer-facing frontend applications and backend services. You can zoom out from your strongest area of expertise to reason about the wider system and make informed trade-offs across architecture, performance, security, reliability and maintainability.

You have operated at Staff/Principal level or demonstrated equivalent technical scope, with experience designing complex distributed systems and driving architectural decisions that affect multiple teams or domains. Other senior engineers seek your input, and you’re comfortable creating technical alignment where there are competing requirements, constraints and opinions.

You have a strong record of leading through influence and growing other engineers. You can mentor experienced engineers, facilitate architecture and design discussions, introduce engineering standards and create an environment where teams can make high-quality technical decisions without making yourself a bottleneck.

You combine technical depth with strong business and product judgement. You work effectively with Product, UX, Security, SRE and engineering stakeholders, use metrics and evidence to guide decisions and think beyond the immediate solution to achieve the best outcome for the wider organisation.

Experience with checkout, payments, orders, e-commerce or marketplace systems is a strong plus; exposure to native Android/Kotlin or iOS/Swift development would be valuable for where the domain is heading.
