Abode Communities

Founded in 1968 during the Civil Rights movement, Abode Communities began as an all-volunteer organization addressing urban inequity through civic engagement, community design, and urban planning. In the mid-1980s, amid economic recession and rising homelessness in Los Angeles, the organization shifted its focus to producing and preserving affordable housing. By 2000, recognizing residents' need for onsite support, it took over management of its housing portfolio and launched its Beyond Homes resident services program. Today, this Los Angeles-based non-profit employs more than 140 people and owns and operates nearly 50 affordable residential communities across California, serving about 7,300 residents, with over half of these communities offering complimentary onsite resident services.
