Job Description

We're an AI-enabled corporate & personal tax prep firm, supporting 1,000+ of the most innovative founders and their companies — including Cursor, Cognition Labs, and ModRetro. We work with hundreds of executives, HNWIs, and venture capitalists as part of our corporate offering, combining corporate tax, personal taxes, R&D credits, and bookkeeping in one firm to make tax season take as little of our clients' time as possible, without leaving any tax savings on the table. We're growing quickly, well-funded, and backed by XYZ Ventures, Susa Ventures, and Haystack Ventures, alongside operators from Ramp, Stripe, Deel, and others. And while we may have just gotten started a little over two years ago, this isn't our first rodeo: Nick Abouzeid (cofounder & CEO) ran three growth teams at Ramp and previously led marketing at MainStreet ($3M → $15M ARR in 2 years) Kyle Christenson (cofounder & Head of Tax) spent six years auditing at the IRS, then joined MainStreet to handle their most complex claims.

Why this role is different

Most tax work in this industry gets jammed into the back half of busy season by people who are tired and over-leveraged. We've built the firm so the technical experts on the most complex corporate returns get the time, source documents, and tooling to do the work right. You're the technical backbone for our corporate portfolio (either 1120 or 1065/1120-S, depending your background). Our Client Success Managers own the non-tax administrative work; you make sure the work that leaves the firm is bulletproof. We optimize for the things that actually matter to the work: Own technical quality – you decide what "great" looks like in our 1065 and 1120-S work, and you keep us honest about it as we scale. No time-tracking – we don't track hours. We value results and empathy over arbitrary time-tracking. Build, don't repeat – we're a tech-forward firm. When you spot a recurring issue, you don't just fix it on this return; you partner with engineering to make sure it's caught automatically on the next one. Judgment over throughput – we'd rather you hold a return for one more day to get a §754 election right than push it out the door on schedule.

We’re looking for a technically strong, hands-on U.S. Tax Manager to own the quality of our partnership and S-corporation tax work. You’ll be the person our team, founders, and CFOs rely on when the answer is not obvious—and when getting it right matters. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys digging into source documents, solving complex tax questions, and turning technical conclusions into accurate returns, defensible workpapers, and practical advice.

What you'll do

  • Be the go-to technical expert. Own the quality and accuracy of complex Forms 1065 and 1120-S, including Schedules K-1 and K-2/K-3.
  • Research complex or unfamiliar tax issues, identify reasonable assumptions, document supportable conclusions, and explain the recommended approach clearly to founders, CFOs, and internal teams.
  • Handle the technically complex work. Lead the team’s day-to-day workstream preparation and review of complex partnership and S corporation tax returns, including Schedule K-1/K-3 processing, inside and outside tax basis calculations, debt allocations, and S-corporation shareholder basis and accumulated adjustments account calculations.
  • Support the full entity life cycle. Advise on and review the tax treatment of formations, contributions, interest transfers, redemptions, distributions, mergers, restructurings, and liquidations.
  • Read the source materials. Analyze operating and partnership agreements, cap tables, distribution waterfalls, transaction documents, and board consents. Translate their legal and economic terms into clean, supportable workpapers, allocations, and tax returns.
  • Navigate multistate issues and address international reporting. Provide technical guidance on state income and franchise taxes, nexus, apportionment, composite and withholding filings, and state pass-through entity tax elections; Review matters involving foreign partners, Schedules K-2 and K-3, and withholding and information-reporting requirements, including Forms 8804/8805 and 1042/1042-S.
  • Partner with Client Success Managers. They will manage much of the administrative coordination; you will provide the technical backbone that makes our work accurate, defensible, and valuable to clients.
  • Manage competing priorities, anticipate risks, flag issues early, and lead the team in meeting filing and client-delivery deadlines.
  • Use technology thoughtfully. Lean on our technology stack to improve efficiency and consistency while knowing when professional judgment and hands-on review are non-negotiable. Able to identify errors and unsupported positions, provide actionable technical feedback, and turn recurring issues into repeatable processes and training.

What makes you a fit

  • CPA or EA designation
  • Five or more years of hands-on U.S. tax experience focused on flow-through entities.
  • At least two years of tax planning and compliance experience with operating partnerships and/or S corporations
  • Demonstrated ability to independently prepare or review basis, capital account, special allocation, Section 704(c), and Section 743(b) calculations
  • Ability to read partnership and operating agreements and connect their economic provisions to the related tax allocations and reporting
  • Strong tax research skills and the ability to produce clear, defensible technical conclusions and workpapers
  • Ability to review and develop team members while maintaining accountability for quality and deadlines
  • Clear communication skills, sound judgment, and a habit of identifying and escalating issues early
  • A mindset that goes beyond getting a return out the door—you want the work to be accurate, well-supported, and defensible

Nice to haves

  • Experience with 704(b) book adjustments, private fund partnerships, GP/LP structures, carries-interest or management-fee-waiver allocations, and multi-tier flow through structures
  • Experience with targeted capital accounts, complex distribution waterfalls, disguised-sale rules, and partnership-interest transactions
  • Experience with individual and blocker corporations, and equity-compensation reporting
  • Experience with transaction modeling, tax planning, tax notices, or federal and state examinations
  • Experience developing technical guidance or delivering training to tax professionals
  • Prior exposure to a technology-forward or automated tax workflow
  • Interest in helping shape the future of a product-first, technology-enabled tax firm

What we offer

  • Generous cash comp with meaningful equity upside
  • Fully remote, with twice-yearly company offsites
  • A modern tech stack — no SmartVault, no ShareFile, no PDF email tag — built specifically to make complex flow-through work faster and cleaner
  • A global, ex-Big-4 production and review bench so you spend your time on judgment work, not data entry
  • A book of complex flow-through clients spanning VC-backed startups, multi-tier funds, and high-growth SMBs
  • The chance to define how a tech-forward firm handles complex corporate work
