Remote hr generalist — private ambulance / nemt experience required

This role requires prior work experience at a private ambulance, EMS or NEMT company. Not "healthcare in general." Not hospital HR. We mean you have worked for an ambulance service or medical transportation provider and you already know how this business runs.

This position is fully remote, which means we cannot spend the first six months teaching someone the industry. You need to already understand crews, shifts, certifications, dispatch, payors and facility partners on day one. About Priority Patient Transport

Priority Patient Transport has served Virginia's Shenandoah Valley and Central Virginia since 2007. From five offices — Staunton (HQ), Harrisonburg, Charlottesville, Winchester and Roanoke — our teams provide non-emergency medical transportation (wheelchair, BLS and ALS), community paramedicine and mobile integrated healthcare visits, EMS standby for events, and transport services under federal and state contracts.

Our people are the company. EMTs, paramedics, wheelchair van operators and dispatchers are who our patients and facility partners actually see — and keeping those crews hired, credentialed and supported is what this role is about.

The role

We're hiring a fully remote Human Resources Generalist to run day-to-day HR for our multi-site EMS organization: recruiting and hiring field staff, onboarding, EMS credential tracking, benefits and leave paperwork, and being the person employees call with questions.

You'll work from your own office, partner by phone, video and messaging with our operations managers and field supervisors at all five locations, and report directly to the owner/VP of Operations. The daily work is yours to run; the bigger calls — policy changes, terminations, serious employee-relations matters — come to leadership.

Because you already come from this industry, you'll recognize the problems on sight: the medic whose Virginia OEMS cert lapses in 60 days, the open night car nobody wants, the wheelchair van driver whose MVR just came back wrong, the new hire who ghosted before orientation.

What you'll do

• Recruiting and hiring
  • Post and manage openings for EMTs, paramedics, wheelchair van operators, dispatchers and office staff; source candidates and run phone screens
  • Coordinate interviews with on-site operations leaders, keep candidates warm, and move offers and paperwork through fast — this industry loses candidates to slow hiring
  • Build pipeline through EMT and paramedic programs, community colleges, fire/EMS agencies, virtual career fairs and employee referrals
  • Keep the applicant tracking workflow current and report open positions and time-to-hire
• Onboarding and credentialing
  • Run new-hire onboarding remotely: offer letters, e-signature paperwork, background checks and fingerprinting, drug screening and DOT/physical scheduling, orientation setup
  • Coordinate I-9 completion with an authorized representative at the local office and verify documentation properly
  • Hand off field training and preceptor assignment to operations and track completion
  • Track every credential with zero lapses: Virginia OEMS / NREMT certifications, CPR, ACLS, PALS and other cards, driver's licenses and MVR checks, immunization and TB records, continuing education hours and recertification deadlines
  • Own the recert and expiration calendar and push advance reminders to staff and supervisors
• Employee support and retention
  • Be reachable and responsive to employee questions from every location — phone, text, email and video, including crews on off-shifts
  • Document performance conversations and corrective action alongside supervisors, and escalate serious matters to leadership
  • Conduct exit interviews, track turnover by office and position, and flag retention problems early
  • Support recognition and engagement efforts for field staff who rarely sit at a desk
• Benefits, leave and payroll support
  • Handle benefit enrollments, changes and open enrollment, and answer employee benefit questions
  • Process leave paperwork — FMLA, ADA accommodation requests, personal and medical leave, return-to-work — with leadership's sign-off
  • Provide payroll with accurate new hire, change, termination, PTO and shift-differential information
  • Report workplace injuries, open and follow workers' compensation claims, and track return-to-work status
• Records and compliance
  • Maintain personnel files and HR records accurately, confidentially and digitally
  • Keep OSHA 300 logs, bloodborne pathogen and exposure documentation, and HIPAA training records current
  • Follow and help maintain our handbook, job descriptions and HR policies
  • Support documentation and personnel requirements tied to our federal and state contracts
  • Send leadership clean weekly HR reporting: headcount, turnover, open positions, credential status

Required

• 2+ years of employment at a private ambulance company, EMS agency or NEMT / medical transportation provider — this is a hard requirement
• 2+ years of HR experience covering recruiting, onboarding and employee paperwork (may overlap with the above)
• Working knowledge of EMS credentialing: state EMS office certifications, NREMT, CPR/ACLS/PALS, MVR and driver requirements, recert cycles
• Familiarity with I-9, FMLA, ADA and EEO basics — enough to know when to raise a flag
• Proven remote-work track record: self-managed, highly responsive, disciplined about documentation and follow-through without anyone standing over you
• A private, secure home office, reliable high-speed internet, and a setup where confidential employee and patient-related information cannot be seen or overheard
• Comfortable living in phone, video and chat all day with people who are in vehicles and facilities, not at desks
• Proficient with HRIS/ATS systems and Microsoft Office or Google Workspace
• Available during Eastern time business hours
• Must pass a background check

Nice to have

• Current or former EMT or Paramedic certification
• Experience with Virginia OEMS credentialing specifically
• Familiarity with EMS operations software (TraumaSoft or similar) and its HR/scheduling modules
• Experience hiring for multiple locations or a scattered, shift-based workforce
• SHRM-CP or PHR certification (or working toward one)
• Workers' compensation or leave administration experience
• Experience supporting government or federal contract staffing requirements
• Bilingual English/Spanish
