Job Description

Who We Are

Inovalon was founded in 1998 on the belief that technology, and data specifically, would empower the transformation of the entire healthcare ecosystem for the better, improving both outcomes and economics. At Inovalon, we believe that when our customers are successful in their missions, healthcare improves. Therefore, we focus on empowering them with data-driven solutions. And the momentum is building.

Together, as ONE Inovalon, we are a united force delivering solutions that address healthcare’s greatest needs. Through our mission-based culture of inclusion and innovation, our organization brings value not just to our customers, but to the millions of patients and members they serve.

Who You Are

As a Principal Health Data Scientist, you lead highly complex programming, analytics, and statistical modeling work that supports services for internal and external clients. You serve as an advanced individual contributor and subject matter expert, partnering with research scientists, health services researchers, health economists, clinicians, project managers, and business analysts to deliver actionable healthcare insights. You help the business solve strategic problems by turning large, complex datasets into scalable solutions, while also guiding less experienced team members and strengthening team capabilities.

What You'll Do

  • Lead advanced programming, analytics, and statistical work to generate insight from large administrative claims datasets, electronic medical records, and healthcare registry datasets.
  • Develop and apply complex modeling, statistical analyses, and hypothesis testing to address key strategic business problems and support research and product offerings.
  • Use SQL to perform advanced data extraction, transformation, and data management, and maintain well-documented libraries of source code and algorithms for future use.
  • Communicate analytical findings clearly and precisely to internal stakeholders and external clients, translating complex results into actionable recommendations.
  • Respond to and lead highly complex operational data requests, including ad hoc queries that support research projects and client deliverables.
  • Provide quality control, quality assurance, and project review support, including solution-oriented guidance and cross-functional mentoring across project teams.
  • Partner with Enterprise Data Management, Data Integration, MORE2 Registry®, and iPORT+™ teams to identify, understand, and resolve data issues and improve process efficiency, productivity, and scalability.
  • Troubleshoot complex production-related issues and coordinate effective resolution across teams.
  • Assist in evaluating data analytics vendors and tools to support team and business needs.
  • Uphold responsibilities related to separation of duties, applicable processes, and procedures within your job function.

What You'll Need

  • 8+ years of professional experience in the healthcare or pharmaceutical industries working with administrative claims data and big data.
  • Master’s degree in computer science, machine learning, applied mathematics, econometrics, statistics, engineering, physics, or a related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Advanced expertise in programming, analytics, statistics, and analytical modeling for complex healthcare data use cases.
  • Strong experience working with administrative claims data, electronic medical records, healthcare registry data, and large-scale data environments.
  • Advanced proficiency in SQL for data extraction, transformation, management, and ad hoc querying.
  • Demonstrated ability to document source code, algorithms, and methods for reuse, quality, and scalability.
  • Ability to learn new datasets, tools, and business domains quickly, expand scope over time, and apply new knowledge to improve performance and outcomes.
  • Ability to influence cross-functional partners, mentor less experienced team members, and communicate persuasively on complex topics across disciplines.
  • Ability to adapt effectively to changing priorities, new assignments, ambiguity, and evolving business needs while staying focused on results.
  • Ability to generate practical, creative solutions to strategic business problems and improve data processes through innovative thinking.
  • Strong analytical skills, including evaluating variable factors, drawing evidence-based conclusions, and selecting appropriate methods for complex issues.
  • Experience evaluating data analytics vendors and tools.
