ABOUT NTS

Native American Transformer Services, Inc. (NTS) is a Native American-owned power transformer field services company headquartered in Reno, Nevada, with a national project footprint. Utilities, renewable energy developers, and industrial customers rely on NTS to install, assemble, test, maintain, and repair the large power transformers that keep the grid running.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Junior Electrical Engineer provides engineering support for the installation, testing, commissioning, maintenance, and repair of high voltage power transformers and their associated protection systems. Reporting to the Senior Electrical Engineer, this role works alongside project managers and field crews to make sure every transformer NTS touches is assembled, protected, tested, and energized safely and correctly. This is a remote position that combines home office based technical work with 20% to 35% travel to active job sites across the country.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide engineering support for high voltage power transformer projects, including installation, assembly, oil processing, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
• Review and interpret one line diagrams, three line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer nameplate and test data.
• Support protection and control work on transformer installations, including differential, overcurrent, sudden pressure, Buchholz, and temperature protection schemes.
• Assist with relay settings review, relay testing, functional trip checks, and CT/PT circuit verification.
• Perform or oversee electrical testing such as TTR, power factor, winding resistance, insulation resistance, excitation current, and SFRA, then analyze results against baseline and industry standards.
• Interpret dissolved gas analysis and oil quality results and recommend corrective action.
• Prepare test reports, commissioning packages, technical findings, and customer facing documentation.
• Help develop scopes of work, technical proposals, and estimates in partnership with the Senior Electrical Engineer, project management, and business development.
• Serve as a technical resource to field technicians and communicate directly with utility, industrial, and renewable energy customers.
• Follow and promote all NTS safety policies, customer site requirements, and applicable standards including NFPA 70E, OSHA, IEEE C57, and NETA.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field.
• 2 to 4 years of experience working with high voltage power transformers.
• 2 to 4 years of experience in power system protection, including protective relaying and protection and control schemes.
• Working knowledge of transformer test methods and test equipment (Doble, Megger, OMICRON, or similar).
• Ability to read and mark up electrical drawings and schematics.
• Strong written communication skills for technical reports and customer correspondence.
• Ability to work independently and stay productive in a remote setting.
• Valid driver's license and the ability to travel 20% to 35% of the time, sometimes on short notice for outage or emergency work.
• Authorized to work in the United States.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• EIT certification or progress toward a PE license.
• Hands on experience with SEL, GE, or ABB protective relays.
• Field commissioning or substation experience with a utility, testing firm, OEM, or transformer service company.
• Familiarity with LTC controls, cooling controls, and transformer monitoring systems.
• NETA certification or OSHA 10/30.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Remote home office work with reliable internet, combined with outdoor field work at substations, generation sites, and industrial facilities.
• Exposure to weather, energized equipment areas, heights, and confined spaces with proper training and PPE.
• Ability to climb ladders and transformers, lift up to 50 pounds, and work extended hours during outages or emergency response.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

• Salary: $72,000 to $95,000 annually, based on experience.
