JOB SUMMARY

The data and development engineer will own the health of our data warehouse and Azure cloud infrastructure while building the next generation of internal tools using AI-assisted development practices. This role sits at the center of how Liberty turns raw operational data — from our agency management systems, carrier feeds, and finance platforms — into trusted, well-governed information that powers reporting, dashboards, and emerging internal applications across the brokerage. The role also administers a portion of Liberty's Azure subscription — the cloud foundation for our internal operating and AI platforms — and leads the retirement of the legacy systems those platforms replace.

The ideal candidate is equally comfortable administering a SQL Server data warehouse and using modern AI coding assistants to design, build, and ship production-grade internal applications faster than traditional development allows. This is not an AI or machine-learning research role — it is a software engineering and data infrastructure role for someone who has made AI-assisted coding a core part of how they build software.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Data Warehouse, Database & Cloud Platform Administration
• Own the health, performance, and security of Liberty’s SQL Server / Azure SQL data warehouse infrastructure, including production and reporting databases.
• Administer, monitor, and tune database environments: indexing, query performance, backup and recovery, capacity planning, and patching.
• Build, maintain, and monitor the ETL/ELT pipelines that pull data from source systems — agency management systems, carrier and finance platforms, HR/payroll, and other line-of-business tools — into the warehouse.
• Design and maintain data normalization, transformation, and modeling logic so downstream reporting and BI tools work from a single, consistent source of truth.
• Manage schema changes, data quality checks, and job orchestration/scheduling for recurring data loads; troubleshoot and resolve pipeline failures and data discrepancies.
• Define and enforce data access controls, retention practices, and documentation standards for the warehouse, in coordination with IT and compliance.
• Collaborate with IT Department team members and conform to Liberty's governing technology policies — including security, change management, access provisioning, and architecture standards — across all warehouse, cloud, and application work.
• This role carries a dotted-line reporting relationship to Technology Operations.
• Partner with the BI/Analytics team to expose clean, well-modeled data sets to existing and future consumption layers, including dashboards, internal applications, and APIs.
• Administer responsible portions of Liberty's Microsoft Azure subscription: resource and subscription organization, role-based access control through Entra ID, cost management and budget monitoring, tagging and naming standards, and platform-level security configuration.
• Own the Azure infrastructure supporting Liberty OS and Liberty Aura — provisioning, configuration, monitoring, patching, and capacity planning for the app services, databases, key vaults, and supporting resources those platforms depend on.
• Lead the decommissioning of legacy systems and databases: plan and execute data migration and archival, confirm records-retention obligations are satisfied before shutdown, retire orphaned Azure resources, and document what was retired and where the data now lives.

• AI-Enabled Development
• Design, build, and maintain internal software applications and automations using AI-assisted development tools and coding agents as a primary part of the development workflow.
• Translate business and operational needs from BI, Operations, and other Liberty teams into working internal tools, integrations, and automations.
• Apply sound software engineering practice — code review, version control, testing, and documentation — to everything shipped, regardless of how much of it was AI-assisted.
• Evaluate and responsibly adopt new AI coding tools and workflows, and share practices that raise the team’s overall development speed and quality.
• Build and maintain integrations between the data warehouse and internal business applications.
• Work within Liberty’s data handling, security, and compliance guardrails when building anything that touches production, sensitive, or regulated data.

Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• 6+ years of experience administering SQL Server or a comparable relational database platform in a production environment.
• Hands-on experience building and maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines and data warehouse or data mart architectures.
• Hands-on experience administering a Microsoft Azure subscription: resource and subscription organization, role-based access control (Entra ID), cost management, and platform security configuration.
• Strong SQL skills, including query optimization, indexing strategy, and performance troubleshooting.
• Practical experience building software using modern AI coding assistants or agents (for example, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or Cursor) as part of a real development workflow, not just casual use.
• Working proficiency in at least one modern programming language (for example, Python, C#, or JavaScript/TypeScript) for building internal tools and automations.
• Familiarity with version control (Git) and standard software development lifecycle practices.
• Strong troubleshooting skills and comfort owning a system end to end, from data ingestion through the reports and applications built on top of it.
• Experience migrating off and decommissioning legacy systems or databases, including data migration, archival, and retention-compliant shutdown.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical tradeoffs to non-technical stakeholders.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience with Azure SQL Managed Instance or another cloud data platform.
• Experience with infrastructure-as-code (Bicep, ARM, or Terraform) and Azure cost management or FinOps practices.
• Experience with Tableau or another modern BI/reporting tool, as a data publisher or consumer.
• Experience in insurance, brokerage, or financial services, or with agency management systems such as Applied Epic or AMS360.
• Experience building or integrating with MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers or similar agentic/AI tool-calling architectures.
• Exposure to data governance or regulatory compliance requirements relevant to insurance and financial data.
• Experience mentoring other developers on AI-assisted development practices.
