Operational accountant

Your reports should do more than tell the business what happened. They should show it where to go next. Our client is a well-established security services business with a sizeable operational network, where financial performance is closely linked to what happens on the ground. This role gives you the opportunity to work beyond traditional accounting, using financial information to understand branch performance, identify profitability concerns and support better commercial decisions.

Reporting to the Financial Manager, you’ll combine financial reporting with hands-on business partnering. A significant portion of the role will involve working with branches — understanding their numbers, challenging performance where necessary and helping operational teams identify what needs to change. You’ll also have 1–2 indirect reports, while working across the business to turn financial information into action.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare and analyse financial information for branches and operational stakeholders
• Assess branch profitability and highlight areas requiring intervention
• Monitor financial performance and investigate unusual movements
• Provide reporting and commentary that helps management understand the business
• Work closely with branches to unpack costs, revenue and profitability
• Use FMR and internal systems to analyse and interpret financial data
• Assist with financial reporting requirements and month-end activities
• Identify opportunities to improve processes and financial performance
• Support the Financial Manager with operational and commercial analysis
• Follow through on identified actions and assist in implementing improvements
• Provide guidance and oversight to 1–2 indirect reports

Job Experience and Skills Required

• BCom Accounting
• Completed SAICA or SAIPA articles, SAICA articles will be advantageous
• 3–5 years’ experience without articles, or 2–3 years post-articles
• Background as a Financial Accountant, Operational Accountant or Financial Analyst
• Security industry experience preferred
• Candidates from other branch-based, field-service, facilities or operationally intensive industries will also be considered
• Strong analytical and reporting capability
• Commercial understanding with an ability to assess profitability
• Strong Excel skills
• FMR and/or internal system experience advantageous
• Comfortable working onsite and travelling as required
• Practical, hands-on approach with strong follow-through
• Able to engage confidently with both finance and operational stakeholders
