Estimator – overhead line

An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced Estimator to join a leading power infrastructure environment supporting transmission and distribution projects across Southern Africa. This role is ideal for a commercially minded professional with strong technical knowledge of overhead line construction, power networks, and EPC project environments.

Duties & Responsibilities

As an Estimator, you will be responsible for developing accurate and competitive cost estimates for overhead transmission and distribution line projects. Working closely with engineering, procurement, and project teams, you will evaluate tender requirements, develop pricing strategies, assess project risks, and support the successful submission of bids for major power infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will possess strong analytical abilities, a thorough understanding of project costing principles, and experience estimating projects within transmission, distribution, utility, construction, or EPC environments.

Education

Diploma or Degree in Electrical Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or related field

Job Experience & Skills Required

• 5-10 years' estimating experience within the electrical, transmission, distribution, power, or construction industries
• Proven experience estimating overhead transmission and distribution line projects
• Strong understanding of EPC, construction, and project costing methodologies
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, route plans, line profiles, and technical specifications
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and estimating software
• Commercial and financial analysis experience
• Tender preparation and bid support experience
• Strong risk assessment and cost modelling capabilities
• Supplier and subcontractor management experience
• Excellent communication and reporting skills
• Ability to perform effectively within deadline-driven tender environments

Preferred Experience

• Transmission and distribution infrastructure projects
• Utility-scale electrical infrastructure projects
• Renewable energy grid connection projects
• Overhead line projects from 11kV to 400kV and above
• Power infrastructure projects across Southern Africa
• Transmission network construction and maintenance projects

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare detailed cost estimates for transmission and distribution line projects
• Review tender enquiries, scope documents, drawings, and specifications
• Develop labour, plant, material, equipment, and subcontractor cost estimates
• Compile commercial submissions and pricing schedules
• Conduct technical and commercial evaluations
• Identify project risks, assumptions, exclusions, and opportunities
• Participate in tender adjudication and commercial review processes
• Obtain and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations
• Maintain historical cost databases and estimating records
• Support contract negotiations and project handovers following successful awards
