The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) is a highly selective institution that is consistently recognized as one of the top comprehensive colleges in the nation. Founded in 1855 as the New Jersey State Normal School, TCNJ maintains the eighth highest four-year graduation rate among all public colleges and universities. It is ranked by Money as one of the top 15 public colleges “most likely to pay off financially,” and U.S. News & World Report rates it the No. 1 public institution among regional universities in the northeast.
The Chemistry Department has 13 full-time faculty members, 9 of whom are tenure-track, and approximately 120 majors. We occupy a recently expanded and renovated Chemistry Building, which is part of TCNJ’s six-building STEM Complex, providing tremendous opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. The Chemistry Department offers state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities with extensive instrumentation (see: science.tcnj.edu/about/facilities-labs).
TCNJ’s Department of Chemistry offers a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry degree with specializations in Biochemistry, Materials Chemistry, and Secondary Education. The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry degree can be American Chemical Society (ACS) certified. Over 80% of our majors participate in one or more semesters of research with a Chemistry faculty member. A large percentage of our undergraduates go on to earn Ph.D.s in Chemistry and related fields. In the past five years, the department was awarded over $3 million in external grants and has produced more than 40 peer-reviewed papers or book chapters. TCNJ faculty and students are very active with the American Chemical Society and recently hosted the Middle Atlantic Regional Meeting (MARM) in 2022 with the Trenton Local Section. The Department of Chemistry at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor, starting Spring 2027. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in one of the Chemistry subdisciplines (Analytical, Biochemistry, Inorganic, Organic, or Physical) or a closely related field, with teaching experience in introductory, analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic, or physical chemistry. We invite applicants who are committed to high-quality teaching and mentorship with undergraduate students and possess a commitment to using active-learning pedagogies in lecture and laboratory settings. We encourage applications from candidates with a wide range of professional backgrounds and experiences, including mid-career applicants.
Teaching responsibilities will include General Chemistry and one or more other courses, including Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Thermodynamics, and/or our General Organic Biochemistry (GOB) course for nursing students. These teaching assignments are typically scheduled during the day, but may on occasion require instruction of an evening course section. Preference will be given to applicants whose background enables them to teach upper-level advanced courses– some examples include organic synthesis, instrumental analysis, bioanalytical chemistry, process chemistry, kinetics, pharmacology and toxicology, bioinformatics, proteomics, or medicinal chemistry. Ideal candidates should have an interest in developing and implementing high-impact teaching pedagogies that use active learning and student-centered approaches, as well as laboratory instruction that focuses on inquiry-based learning. The Department continues to enhance its General, Organic, and GOB chemistry curricula, and its B.S. degree track, which includes ACS-certification and materials science and biochemistry specializations. Please visit the Department's website for information on its curriculum, faculty members, and their research interests: https://chemistry.tcnj.edu
Applicants will be expected to actively participate in departmental activities, including departmental and faculty committees in addition to their 24 FWH/10 month teaching load. The Department of Chemistry and the School of Science are also deeply invested in the professional development of all of our faculty. As members of the TCNJ community, faculty and staff benefit from professional development resources, including Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) instructional mini-grants, pedagogical workshops, and campus-wide training programs supported by Academic Affairs and Human Resources.
Persons with disabilities may request reasonable accommodations in order to perform the essential functions of the position. If the requested accommodation(s) cannot be made because it would cause the employer undue hardship, the applicant may not be eligible for the position.
Employment at TCNJ is contingent upon the successful completion of an applicable background check, reference checks, and verification of identity and authorization to work in the United States (Form I-9).
Applicants who require a reasonable accommodation to apply or interview should contact hr@tcnj.edu.
