Technical lead manager, extraction service

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
• 8 years of experience in low-level systems programming languages (e.g., C++ or C).
• Experience designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed systems, with a focus on scalability, fault tolerance, and reliability.
• Experience in technical leadership and managing teams.
• Experience with software development practices (e.g., unit testing, code reviews, version control, CI/CD systems).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience or interest in semantic understanding.
• Experience leading technical strategy and providing technical guidance to engineering teams.
• Experience or interest in distributed systems of scale.
• Experience or interest in machine learning systems and methods.
• Experience identifying root causes of technical problems and providing guidance to solve them.

With technical and leadership expertise, you manage engineers across multiple teams and locations, a large product budget and oversee the deployment of large-scale projects across multiple sites internationally.

As the Technical Lead Manager (TLM) for the Extraction Service, you will lead the engineering team responsible for extracting high-fidelity, structural content from inputs with lossless precision.

In the AI era, downstream LLM reasoning and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) are only as good as the underlying data ingestion. The Extraction Service is a foundational, standalone building block that powers critical workflows across Google by converting unstructured, multi-modal documents (PDFs, Office formats like DocX/PPTX, tabular data, XML/EPUB, markup, images, audio, and video) into rich, structured semantic representations.

The Core team builds the technical foundation behind Google’s flagship products. We are owners and advocates for the underlying design elements, developer platforms, product components, and infrastructure at Google. These are the essential building blocks for excellent, safe, and coherent experiences for our users and drive the pace of innovation for every developer. Individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

US: $207000 - $300000 (USD) + 20% bonus target + equity + benefits

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Define the technical goal and system architecture for high-throughput, low-latency, and stateless content extraction across different formats (PDFs, DocX, PPTX, XLSX/CSV, XML, HTML, and rich multimedia).
• Drive the engineering roadmap to hit critical deliverables, including SA and GA milestones.
• Manage a team of ~6 software engineers, conducting regular one-on-ones, setting clear performance expectations, and actively coaching engineers to support their career growth.
• Collaborate closely with PM, TPM, and SRE to balance feature roadmaps, capacity planning, and production readiness.
• Serve as the primary technical point of contact for key partners.
