The business of sports is booming. TV ratings, team valuations and player salaries set records every year. The world's largest tech firms are vying with TV networks for rights to broadcast games; private equity firms, sovereign wealth funds and billionaires are pouring billions of dollars into teams. Bloomberg News is looking for an experienced editorial leader to lead our sports coverage from New York. We approach sports like we do most other subjects: We follow the money.

You will oversee a team of journalists and shape our coverage of one of the world’s most important and appealing business stories. Your team will cover the biggest leagues in the world, breaking news about team sales and media rights deals, as well as partnerships with sponsors and apparel providers. The growing influence of sports gambling is another coverage arc, as are the name, image and likeness deals reshaping college sports. You will be the point person on the east coast for media coverage. More than half of Bloomberg’s media & entertainment team resides in either New York or Washington DC. You will help that team respond to breaking news in the morning, promote its stories across the newsroom and can get involved in advancing our coverage of newspapers, TV news, social media creators and regulation.

Some expertise in sports is preferred, but we are primarily looking for an experienced manager and editor who can coach reporters on how to break big stories, analyze major trends and develop long-lead features. Our coverage will span text, video, audio and live events. Sports intersects with so many other aspects of society, including politics, media, finance and real estate. You will be responsible for coordinating our coverage with other teams across Bloomberg.

The position is based in New York and is a full-time role. We’ll expect you to:

• Expand and improve our coverage of the business of sports, helping reporters to deliver a steady stream of scoops and ambitious enterprise.
• Lead with urgency and accuracy. You need to make fast, sound editorial calls as news breaks.
• Be selective. Bloomberg isn’t going to cover every single sports story or even sports business story. You need to work with your colleagues to develop a clear vision for what stories we do and don’t cover.
• Develop a strong culture. Sports coverage has been shared by many different teams. This is the first time in years we will have a full-time, dedicated leader for sports in New York; you need to establish the culture of the team.
• Collaborate across the globe. Sports is a global story and you will work closely with editors and reporters on every continent.

You’ll need to have:

• Experience working in a fast-paced financial or business news environment.
• Strong editorial judgment and the ability to write and edit sharp, concise headlines and provide context immediately after that.
• A track record or interest in working in many storytelling formats and navigating a large and complex newsroom.
• Comfort with data, numbers, analytics, and emerging newsroom technologies.

Salary Range: 130,000 - 180,000 USD Annual + Benefits + Bonus

The referenced salary range is based on the Company's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level.
