The Opportunity

As a Solution Architect within Global Payment Solutions (GPS) you will design and assure end-to-end payment solutions that are secure, resilient, compliant and scalable. The role spans core payments capabilities including initiation, processing, orchestration, routing, confirmations, reconciliation, investigations and reporting and management information (MI). You will partner across product, engineering, operations, cybersecurity and risk to translate outcomes into practical technology designs. A key part of the role is balancing time-to-market with long-term maintainability and operational excellence. Success looks like solutions that are buildable, testable and operationally ready with clear non-functional requirements (NFRs) and design evidence. You will also help strengthen engineering maturity through governance, coaching and simplification across the Global Payment Solutions estate.

What you'll be doing

• Own solution architecture across payments platform initiatives including new capabilities, modernization, migrations, and regulatory-driven change
• Translate business requirements into designs spanning applications, data, integration, infrastructure, security, and operational processes
• Produce and maintain architecture artifacts including high-level design (HLD), low-level design (LLD), diagrams, integration flows, non-functional requirements (NFRs), runbooks and architecture decision records (ADRs)
• Design integration patterns across the payments ecosystem including application programming interface (API)-led, event-driven or message-driven and file-based approaches where required
• Establish handling for payment-specific concerns including idempotency, timeouts, retries, ordering, cutoffs, reconciliation, exception handling, and auditability
• Define and assure non-functional requirements (NFRs) covering availability, resilience, latency, throughput, disaster recovery (DR), capacity, observability, security and privacy
• Embed HSBC-aligned controls including least privilege, encryption, secrets management, logging and monitoring and vulnerability management
• Govern design through reviews and architecture forums, making trade-offs explicit and supporting delivery at pace

What we're looking for

• Bring proven solution architecture experience delivering complex, distributed systems in an enterprise environment
• Demonstrable experience delivering ISO 20022 payment solutions, including message schemas, mapping/transformation, validation, versioning, and coexistence with legacy formats during migration
• Apply demonstrable knowledge of payments architectures and/or high-throughput transactional platforms
• Use strong integration experience across application programming interfaces (APIs), messaging or event streaming and service orchestration
• Establish robust non-functional requirements (NFR) engineering across resilience, performance, capacity, disaster recovery (DR), observability, and operational readiness
• Embed security-by-design across identity and access management (IAM) concepts, threat modeling, encryption, secrets management and secure application programming interface (API) design
• Produce clear architecture artifacts and facilitate structured design reviews and governance
• Partner effectively with stakeholders and explain complex topics clearly across product, engineering, operations, cybersecurity and risk
• Apply experience modernizing legacy payments platforms and/or migrating to cloud or hybrid architectures

Your final fixed pay offer will depend on the candidate and several variables, including but not limited to, role responsibilities, skill set, depth of experience and education, licensing/certification requirements, internal relativity, and specific work location.
