Senior Software Engineer, Front End – CBS Sports Digital

Req: 45930 | Department: CBS Sports.com Technology | Type: Full-Time, On-Site Locations: Nashville, TN; Louisville, KY; Fort Lauderdale, FL

About the Role

Join CBS Sports Digital and help build the web experiences that millions of sports fans use every day across CBSSports.com and our apps. We are looking for a Senior Front End Engineer to join our Content Management team, a small engineering group that partners closely with design and product to turn ideas into fast, accessible, production-grade fan experiences.

What You Will Do

  • Build Front-End Features: Design and ship production-grade features for web using React, Next.js, and TypeScript, from prototype through launch.
  • Own Performance: Improve and protect Core Web Vitals through rendering strategy, code splitting, lazy loading, and image and asset optimization.
  • Contribute to Standards: Build and evolve reusable components and shared patterns that scale across the organization.
  • Collaborate and Prototype: Work with design and product to quickly design, develop, and test solutions to key business challenges.
  • Raise the Bar on Code Quality: Review code for style, testability, accessibility, and efficiency, and mentor engineers on front-end best practices.
  • Type Safety: Contribute to TypeScript standards (strict mode, shared types, codegen) so our codebases stay maintainable and refactor-safe.
  • Monorepo Workflows: Use and contribute to monorepo tooling (e.g., Turborepo, Nx) to support build, test, and deploy across web applications.
  • Operational Excellence: Build with reliability in mind, including testing, front-end monitoring, and alerting.
  • Document: Contribute clear documentation and diagrams to help onboard other engineers.
  • Use AI Tools: Use AI development tools to speed up your workflow and share what works with the team.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience building scalable, production-grade web applications with React and Next.js.
  • Strong expertise in JavaScript and TypeScript, including asynchronous programming, generics, strict typing, and modern ES6+ features.
  • Deep knowledge of HTML and CSS, including responsive layout, cross-browser compatibility, accessibility, and performance optimization.
  • Solid understanding of browser behavior, rendering, and front-end performance (e.g., Core Web Vitals, lazy loading, code splitting).
  • Experience consuming APIs (REST and GraphQL), including Apollo Client.
  • Experience with monorepo tooling and workflows (e.g., Turborepo, Nx), including shared packages and task pipelines.
  • Experience with component libraries or design systems and with testing front-end code (unit, integration, end-to-end).
  • Working knowledge of Node.js for server-side rendering and API layers.
  • Strong debugging and performance troubleshooting skills, including monitoring tools (e.g., New Relic, OpenTelemetry).
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders in a fast-paced environment.
  • BS in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
  • Passion for sports and a dedication to creating exceptional fan experiences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with multiple styling approaches (StyleX, CSS Modules, SASS, CSS-in-JS) and design tokens.
  • Exposure to CMS platforms such as WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, or Magento.
  • Experience with AI development tools (Cursor, Copilot, etc.) and with setting up guardrails (rules, commands, skills, sub-agents) to keep AI-generated code clean and production-ready.
  • Familiarity with Generative AI and RAG concepts, or experience building AI-powered features.
  • Cloud experience (AWS preferred) and familiarity with containers (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Familiarity with caching (Redis, Memcached) and messaging systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ).
  • Cloud certifications (AWS, GCP, OCI).
