Job Description:

National Geographic is seeking an experienced Senior Manager, Social Media to lead creative social campaigns across Editorial content and TV programming. In this role, you will be a key contributor in planning, managing and executing the social marketing strategy focused on content strategy for editorial digital stories, magazine features, and TV programming. The Senior Manager will lead best-in-class creative execution from production through launch, with an audience-first approach that ladders up to key business goals: growing magazine and digital subscriptions, driving acquisition to Disney+, and enhancing brand affinity.

To be successful, you will need to be a storyteller and marketer with excellent judgement to balance audience interests and business goals. You’ll have a deep passion, appreciation, and understanding of editorial and entertainment broadly, with a deep breadth of knowledge spanning Natural History/Animal, Science, History, Travel and Adventure, Culture, and Kids topics.

Responsibilities:

Project Management & Leadership

  • Serve as a social lead and strategic partner to Nat Geo Editorial & Content teams, participating in story planning and all phases of content production.
  • Establish best-in-class approaches to campaigns, content & distribution.
  • Partner with subject matter experts, photographers, explorers, and creators to develop content tied to key initiatives.
  • Influence upstream planning to ensure social is embedded early.
  • Lead the development of tentpole social moments.

Content Development & Production

  • Oversee the end-to-end creative pipeline – ideation and creative direction through production and final sign-off from leadership and stakeholders.
  • Partner with agency partners, creative teams, platform strategists, PR, and talent representatives to ensure all output ladders up to the overarching social strategy.
  • Direct hands-on production of social-first content, including talent and subject-matter-expert interviews, on-set creative direction, and social video shoots.

Creator Content Strategy

  • Guide creative ideation, campaign development, and execution for creator initiatives.
  • Partner with Content, Marketing, PR/Comms, Editorial, and Creative teams to develop innovative creator-first content experiences across owned and earned channels.
  • Champion experimentation with emerging content formats while maintaining brand integrity and audience relevance.

Innovation & Growth

  • Drive testing and learning across platforms, formats, and tools.
  • Identify and scale new opportunities to expand reach and influence.

Measurement & Performance

  • Review social platform and Adobe Analytics data to identify high-performing stories and the content patterns that drive audience growth and conversion to NatGeo.com.
  • Use data, insights, and social intelligence to continuously optimize strategy.
  • Establish clear success metrics that go beyond engagement to reflect impact.

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Partner closely with Editorial, Strategy, PR/Comms, Paid Media, Synergy, and Partnerships teams to ensure integrated planning and execution.

Team Leadership & Operations

  • Lead, develop, and scale a high-performing team.
  • Set a high bar for quality, clarity, and execution across all work.
  • Build systems and processes that enable speed, consistency, and innovation.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 7+ years’ experience in social media strategy and marketing, preferably managing large-scale brand or media portfolios.
  • Demonstrated expertise across major social platforms (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Reddit) with a strong understanding of platform ecosystems and trends.
  • Proven track record developing and executing data-driven social strategies that drive audience growth, engagement, and brand impact.
  • Experience launching creator-led franchises, original programming, or large-scale digital content initiatives.
  • Deep understanding of the creator economy, creator monetization models, audience behaviors, and evolving platform ecosystems.
  • Strong campaign leadership experience, translating marketing priorities into integrated, platform-native social activations.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional initiatives, partnering with editorial, marketing, creative, and external stakeholders.
  • Experience managing external partners or agencies, including oversight of publishing, community management, and performance reporting.
  • Deep understanding of content production workflows, with the ability to optimize and evolve processes for speed, scale, and quality.
  • Strong experience developing creator-led content strategies across platforms including TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, and emerging digital channels.
  • Proficiency with social media management, analytics, and reporting tools, with the ability to translate insights into actionable strategies.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present strategies and performance insights to stakeholders.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities, operate in fast-paced environments, and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency with project management tools- AirTable, Asana, etc.
  • Experience managing large budgets.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Advertising, Digital/Social, TV/Film preferred.

The hiring range for this position in Washington, D.C. is $112,700 to $154,800 per year.

The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
