About the Role: The R&D Senior Controls Engineer owns the controls development of automated products from initial concept through release. This role transforms mechanical and electrical systems into reliable, intelligent machines by developing and integrating PLC software, industrial networks, drives, I/O, sensors, and communication interfaces. You will solve complex technical challenges during prototype development and testing while partnering across engineering teams to improve system performance, reliability, diagnosability, and maintainability. As a senior member of the team, you will also mentor junior engineers and help establish the technical standards and reusable controls foundation for future product development.
Responsibilities: Own controls development for automated products from concept, prototyping, and testing through product release. Design, develop, test, and troubleshoot PLC software using Rockwell Allen-Bradley systems. Integrate industrial networks, drives, I/O, sensors, field devices, and external communication interfaces. Troubleshoot complex issues across electrical systems, industrial networks, PLC software, drives, and field equipment. Read and interpret electrical schematics, panel drawings, I/O drawings, and device documentation. Plan and execute meaningful tests and experiments to reduce technical risk during product development. Document significant testing activities, results, technical decisions, and lessons learned. Develop well-organized, equipment-agnostic, and maintainable PLC code that can be transitioned effectively to execution and implementation teams. Create intuitive and efficient Add-On Instructions, User-Defined Data Types, rung comments, tag descriptions, and supporting technical documentation. Support product maturation and complete required Stage-Gate deliverables for released R&D solutions. Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, software, execution, and other cross-functional teams to improve system performance and maintainability. Mentor junior engineers, share technical knowledge, and contribute to the development of controls engineering standards and best practices. Manage technical priorities and administrative responsibilities, including timely timesheet, expense, and training completion. Follow all applicable safety requirements and maintain a strong commitment to safe engineering practices.
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, or a related field. Five or more years of controls engineering experience, preferably within material handling, industrial automation, or a related environment. Advanced proficiency in PLC programming using Rockwell Allen-Bradley systems. Advanced troubleshooting skills across industrial networks, electrical systems, drives, I/O, sensors, and field devices. Ability to read and troubleshoot using electrical schematics, panel drawings, I/O drawings, and equipment documentation. Experience leading technical work and mentoring junior engineers. Strong communication, organization, and project management skills. Demonstrated ability to produce well-structured, maintainable PLC code and clear technical documentation. Strong attention to detail and the ability to solve complex technical problems during prototype development and testing.
