Safety coordinator

Applies professional knowledge and expertise in Environment of Care (EOC), fire and life safety, hazardous materials and waste management, and general Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) principles to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and organizational standards. Serves as the lead for one or more assigned Environmental Health & Safety program areas, including coordination of fire alarm and suppression system testing, hazardous materials inventory and storage practices, and oversight of regulated medical and hazardous waste management.

Works closely with the Infection Prevention team, Facilities, Environmental Services, and local Fire Department officials to ensure all Environmental Health & Safety elements—such as safety and security, fire safety, hazardous materials and waste, medical equipment, utilities, and environmental services—are effectively implemented and maintained. Reviews inspection reports and corrective actions, coordinates internal compliance audits, and supports the hospital’s readiness for Joint Commission, CMS, NFPA, Cal/OSHA, EPA, and state/local regulatory surveys.

Demonstrates sound professional judgment in assessing risk, selecting control strategies, and communicating findings to stakeholders. Provides technical guidance, regulatory interpretation, and recommendations based on current best practices, scientific methodology, and applicable laws and codes. Work is performed independently and reviewed upon completion to ensure predetermined objectives are met. Decisions may affect individual work, other EH&S programs, interdepartmental operations, and regulatory compliance outcomes. This position reports directly to the Safety Officer.

QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in a related area or four years of relevant experience.
• Valid California driver’s license.
• Thorough knowledge and understanding of key Environment of Care (EOC) program areas including fire and life safety, hazardous materials and waste management, construction safety, and infection prevention support.
• In-depth understanding of applicable local, state, and federal regulations, including those from The Joint Commission (TJC), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), OSHA, EPA, California Department of Public Health (CDPH), and State Fire Marshal.
• General knowledge of all Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) domains, including occupational safety, emergency management, industrial hygiene, utilities safety, and environmental services oversight.
• Thorough skill in interpreting and applying regulatory codes, technical standards, and hospital policies to ensure program compliance and risk mitigation.
• Demonstrated proficiency in verbal and written communication, including the ability to communicate technical information clearly to a wide range of stakeholders.
• Strong interpersonal skills and political acumen to interact professionally with regulatory agencies, internal departments, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams in a diverse healthcare environment.
• Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and organizational skills, with the ability to assess complex problems, prioritize competing demands, and execute projects within established timelines and resource constraints.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, demonstrating accountability, initiative, and flexibility in dynamic and time-sensitive situations.
• Capacity to respond to emergencies and urgent facility needs, including after-hours or on-call response to fire alarm activations or EOC-related incidents.
• Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP) (required within one year of employment).
• The ability to work onsite in Oakland and San Francisco.

Preferences:

• Skilled in the use of technology and digital systems for compliance tracking, inspection management, environmental monitoring, and technical reporting (e.g., CMMS, EH&S platforms, Microsoft Office Suite).
• Proficient in operating and interpreting results from technical tools and equipment used in fire safety system diagnostics, air sampling, particle counting, and hazardous materials monitoring.
• Ability to read and interpret technical schematics, construction drawings, fire alarm system blueprints, and mechanical/electrical layouts.
