Summary:

The Radiation Therapist II contributes to the Radiation Oncology Unit’s operational goals and quality of patient care while supporting organizational standards. This role demonstrates advanced technical proficiency, provides guidance to Radiation Therapist I staff, and collaborates across the department. The Therapist II serves as a senior resource, coordinating technical activities during emergencies or unusual situations in the absence of the Chief Therapist.

Responsibilities:

• Manages patient scheduling in a technical area including simulations, field verifications, daily treatments, and cone-downs to avoid delays or interruptions.
• Prepares room and equipment for each treatment. Performs imaging (CBCT, KV, MV, Motion Management) as ordered, to position patient. Analyzes results, identifies issues and takes appropriate action including repositioning patient and repeating procedure to deliver therapy according to treatment plan.
• Performs special procedure treatments (HDR, TBI, SRS, SBRT) and completes treatment documentation. Stocks and stores supplies in technical areas. Advises when supplies are needed.
• Collaborates with Physicians, Physicists, Dosimetrist, and Chief Radiation Therapist in simulation or clinical setup process. Presents set up questions and solutions while utilizing Crew Resource Management Principles and Practices.
• Observes established radiation safety measures (ALARA).
• Performs and documents CT-Sim procedures. Executes simulations in accordance with department policies and procedures. Prepares room and equipment for each simulation and monitors patient.
• Performs complex special procedures (4D CT Respiratory Gating, HDR, TBI, SRS, SBRT, Oral and IV Contrast, Urethrogram) and monitors patient for adverse reactions; seeks assistance of a nurse or physician.
• Participates in scheduled rotations in all department equipment. Serves as emergency on call therapist, rotates between both Radiation Oncology departments. Maintains flexibility and assumes all other additional responsibilities as assigned.
• May serve as a Preceptor for Radiation Therapist I staff, with completion of a preceptor course within six months of attaining Radiation Therapist II status. Serves as a primary resource for students and new hires by modeling professional behavior and providing instruction, assessment, and evaluation.
• Assists staff with complex, high-risk, low-frequency procedures and treatments.
• Reviews physician's orders and radiation therapy treatment plan. Educates patient regarding procedures to ensure patient's understanding.
• Assists patient and family with problems or concerns and refers to proper resource personnel. Identifies and reports potential liabilities and risks management.
• Manages patient documentation in Aria for team communication, charge capture and billing reconciliation. Prepares the treatment record information for setup and treatment.
• Performs weekly chart checks and QA audits at end of treatment through Encounters in Aria EMR. Captures and reviews charges for treatment and simulation procedures.
• May serve as a Charge Radiation Therapist, communicating instructions from radiation oncologists, physicists, and dosimetrists to appropriate staff and ensuring they are carried out.
• Collaborates directly with medical physics and acts as a liaison with other healthcare professionals. Identifies and promptly reports equipment malfunctions.
• Administers prescribed ionizing radiation in accordance with physician instructions, departmental standards, state regulations, and Memorial Healthcare System policies.
• Performs appropriate quality control warm-up procedures on equipment. Troubleshoots, resolves, and reports equipment malfunctions. Maintains and completes monthly department data logs.

Required Work Experience: A minimum of three (3) years of core work experience as a radiation therapist Other Information: Additional Education Info: Graduate of an accredited Radiation Therapy Technologist program with an AS degree in Radiation Therapy or Radiologic Sciences with Radiation Therapy Certification. Additional Certification Info: ARRT Registered Technologist- Radiation Therapy and FL State License Must complete Preceptor class within 6-months of becoming a Therapist - Radiation II.
