Job Description
The Opportunity
The Baltimore Symphony has brought marketing and communications together as one team under a new Vice President, Marketing & Communications. The PR & Social Media Manager joins at the start of that phase, with a real voice in how the team tells the orchestra’s story across press, social media, and the season’s campaigns.
Job Summary
The PR & Social Media Manager is a writer, storyteller, and content creator who directly manages the BSO’s social media presence and carries out its earned media plans. As the in-house partner to the BSO’s PR consultant, the Manager surfaces stories from across the organization, writes the BSO’s press materials, and is a key point of contact for media. The Manager reports to the Vice President, Marketing & Communications, and works closely with the Content Manager, the Creative team, and marketing colleagues.
Responsibilities
Social Media & Digital Content
- Develop social media strategies and content plans that advance the BSO’s mission and revenue goals, and manage the BSO’s official platforms (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, LinkedIn, and X).
- Plan and manage the content calendar, balancing structured campaigns and series with timely, spontaneous content.
- Collaborate on content with departments, the BSO community, partners, sponsors, and the BSYO, OrchKids, and Baltimore Symphony Musicians accounts, including musician-led content and takeovers.
- Manage approvals for performance clips and artist content with Artistic Planning and guest-artist representatives, in line with the musicians’ agreement.
- Engage with followers, foster meaningful conversations, and grow the BSO’s online community and influencer relationships; set and enforce social media guidelines.
- Report on social media performance, use the data to optimize, and share high-performing organic content with the paid media team.
- Capture content at concerts and events, including regular evening and weekend coverage at Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall and The Music Center at Strathmore.
Communications Planning & Coordination
- Implement the annual communications plan led by the Vice President, with emphasis on Baltimore and Washington-area media, and coordinate it with the season’s marketing campaigns so that press, social media, paid media, and owned channels reinforce one another.
- Maintain the communications planning calendar, including quarterly planning with Education, OrchKids, and the BSYO and a forward calendar of anniversaries and milestones.
- Work with the Creative Director and Content Manager to build a library of B-roll and press-ready images, and coordinate filming and footage sharing with partner venues, including Strathmore.
Earned Media & Public Relations
- Serve as the in-house partner to the PR consultant: join planning meetings across departments, surface story opportunities with a recommended angle, and support long-lead and feature pitching.
- Write and route for approval press releases, the monthly media alert, media advisories, calendar listings, fact sheets, and pressroom copy.
- Coordinate artist media availability, prepare leadership, board, and staff for interviews, and host media and photographers at concerts.
- Maintain the media list, tracking changes at local and industry outlets.
- Oversee media monitoring and clip tracking with the PR consultant and the Marketing & Communications Associate; support crisis communications as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, journalism, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- At least 4 years of experience in public relations, marketing, and social media management.
- Excellent writing and storytelling, adapted to different platforms and audiences. Applicants will be asked for a writing sample and examples of social content they have managed.
- Highly organized and proactive, able to manage multiple priorities and collaborate across departments.
- Working knowledge of social media management and analytics tools, including Sprout Social and Google Analytics.
- Skilled at capturing photos and short-form video.
- Regular evening and weekend work in support of concerts and events.
- Preferred: Adobe Creative Cloud, CapCut, Canva, and AI tools; live event or ticketing experience; a strong interest in classical music.
Benefits & Perks:
- Comprehensive Health Coverage: Two low-cost medical plan options for employees.
- Employer-Paid Insurance: Dental, life, and long-term disability insurance are fully covered by the BSO.
- Generous Paid Time Off: Includes ample vacation, personal, and sick leave.
- Financial Wellness & Retirement:
- 403(b) Retirement Plan
- Health Savings Account (HSA)
- Flexible Spending Account (FSA) for Dependent Care
- Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
- Exclusive BSO Perks: Complimentary or discounted tickets to BSO performances.
About the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra
For over a century, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) has been recognized as one of America’s leading orchestras and one of Maryland’s most significant cultural institutions. The orchestra is internationally renowned and locally admired for its innovation, performances, recordings, and educational outreach initiatives, including OrchKids.
The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra performs annually for more than 275,000 people throughout the State of Maryland. Since 1982, the BSO has performed at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore, and since 2005, with the opening of The Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda, MD, the BSO became the nation’s first orchestra performing its full season of classical and pops concerts in two metropolitan areas.
In July 2022, the BSO made history with the announcement that Jonathon Heyward would succeed Music Director Laureate and OrchKids Founder Marin Alsop as the Orchestra’s next Music Director. Maestro Heyward began his inaugural season in September 2023.
