Time Base: Full-Time (1.0 FTE)

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,274.00 - $5,597.00 Per Month ($63,288.00 - $67,164.00 Annually) Salary is commensurate with experience.

Position Summary: Under the general supervision of the Director of Campus Recreation, the Coordinator for Outdoor and Leadership oversees the Outdoor and Leadership program within the Mashouf Wellness Center (MWC), leading and developing students and developing programs for the greater student population through outdoor recreation and leadership opportunities. Incumbent must strategically align work and outcomes with the mission of Student Affairs & Enrollment Management (SAEM).

Position Information:

• Outdoor Leadership Program Development: Provides general oversight for climbing wall operations, including wall compliance with industry safety standards and inspection requirements; manages and tracks inventory for rental gear and equipment in the Outdoor Resource Center, including purchase, maintenance, and check-out/rental processes; develops the Outdoor Trips Program, including day hikes, backpacking, camping, and other excursions into the natural environment; builds and maintains the outdoor trips schedule and coordinates program offerings such as climbing lessons and group climbing sessions; tracks staff certifications needed to maintain best practices and industry standards; manages permitting with campus sites and other locations used for outdoor trips and program activities; develops policies and procedures for the program area and trains staff to uphold them; within established parameters, designs and implements experiences for persons of all abilities, backgrounds, and disabilities; and responsible for risk management, including facility and equipment inspections and assuring proper travel-related procedures.
• On-Campus Clinic & Education: Provides certificate training for various outdoor requirements, including Wilderness First Aid (WFA), First Aid/CPR, and Wilderness First Responder (WFR); coordinates and leads on-campus clinics and education sessions to deliver required and preferred certifications to staff; and maintains records of safety and emergency response training, certifications, inspection checklists, and accident and incident reports.
• Leading and Developing Student Staff: Works alongside student leads for operational areas to make decisions and manage program operations; recruits, hires, trains, schedules, evaluates, disciplines, advises and mentors student staff; meets with staff, both in large groups and one-on-one settings, for direct communication and support of a strong staff team; develops and maintains strong customer service skills of student employees, including self-confidence, critical thinking, communication skills, teamwork, and problem-solving; and advises, mentors, and supports the development of student leadership.
• Administrative: In coordination with Senior Management prepare and monitor annual budget, program and equipment purchases, partnership agreements, etc.; responsible for ordering, maintaining, inventory and secure storage of equipment and services related to program areas; and actively participates in staff meetings, staff trainings, and appropriate national associations.

Minimum Qualifications: Working knowledge of and ability to apply standard theories, principles, practices, and techniques applicable to the program and/or administrative specialty to develop conclusions and make recommendations. Thorough knowledge of policies, procedures, and outside regulations pertaining to the applicable program and/or administrative specialty. Working knowledge of operational and fiscal analysis and techniques. Ability to take initiative and independently plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved. Skill in the research, development and evaluation of policies and programs, including skill in the collection, evaluation, and interpretation of data to develop sound conclusions and make appropriate recommendations. Expertise in investigating and analyzing problems with a broad administrative impact and implications. Ability to anticipate problems and address them proactively. Demonstrated ability to effectively interpret, organize, and present information and ideas in written or presentation form. Ability to train others on new skills and procedures and provide lead work direction.

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Sports Management, Recreation, Adventure Education, or a related field; understanding of the application of student development concepts, including principles of individual and group behavior, and advising students individually and in groups on routine matters; experience with developing and promoting programs and services within area of oversight through a lens of social justice, sustainability, accessibility, and non-traditional as well as traditional programming; demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Strategic Values and Core Competencies for NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation, and SF State’s Strategic Plan; experience hiring, training, scheduling, leading, evaluating, and developing student staff; experience leading college students in a college campus setting; experience with new outdoor program development and implementation, including trip scheduling and campus-site permitting; experience overseeing an indoor climbing wall and outdoor trips & rental equipment programs; experience using program registration software/apps and collecting, analyzing, and reporting usage data; experience applying standards and practices from the Climbing Wall Association (CWA); experience coordinating or instructing outdoor certification trainings and clinics (e.g., Wilderness First Aid, First Aid/CPR, Wilderness First Responder); demonstrated technology, software, and hardware skills including the use of Microsoft Office, email and the internet; experience providing high quality customer service, and contributing to a positive, friendly, work and wellness environment; and membership in the Association for Outdoor Recreation and Education (AORE) and CWA.

Ability to: Oversee daily operations of the climbing wall and outdoor recreation areas including staff, registrations, access, and equipment; work effectively with students who have a variety of skill and experience levels, and who will be working in various levels, from entry to program management levels; rapidly acquire general knowledge of overall operation and functions of climbing wall and outdoor recreation areas; develop and implement policies and procedures that ensure safe instruction and risk management; and use initiative and resourcefulness.

Environmental/Physical/Special Duties: take place mostly in an office setting, with primary locations at the Mashouf Wellness Center. Ability to succeed in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment; work variable nights, weekends and/or holidays, on-campus or off-site, indoors and outdoors, depending upon work conditions and demands, including an occasional overnight stay; use computers and other communication tools for extended periods of time; and competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, staff, and campus community.

Required/License/Certification: First Aid/CPR/AED Certification. Preferred Certification: Wilderness First Aid (WFA) Instructor Certification. Preferred Certification: Current Climbing Wall Instructor certification from the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA) or Professional Climbing Instructors Association (PCIA). Preferred Certification: Single pitch Instructor AMGA or Base Managed Climbing Instructor, or equivalent; outdoor technical skill/instructor. Preferred Certification: First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Certification. Preferred Certification: Wilderness First Responder (WFR) or Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician (WEMT) practices.
