Job Summary

The NICU Care Assistant performs nursing procedures and patient care tasks under the general supervision of a professional staff nurse. Attends to personal needs and comfort of patients and performs a variety of other duties to assist the staff nurse responsible for these patients. The incumbent provides support for the Milk Lab in the NICU. The NICU Care Assistant, although supervised, proceeds alone on routine tasks, referring questionable situations to the appropriate staff nurse or nursing supervisor. Performs other job-related duties as requested.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Demonstrates competency, individually and as part of the multidisciplinary team, in performing clinical care of all patient populations.
• Provides personal care assistance to infants, as directed by the RN, including, bathing, dressing, and feeding; and provides written reports for the patient's medical record on care provided.
• Provides support for the Milk Lab.
• Prepares and checks equipment/supplies and utilizes resources and materials in a safe and efficient manner.
• Observes and communicates changes in the patient's condition to the staff nurse and/or nursing supervisor.
• Communicates and collaborates with other members of the health care team.
• Supports unit-based Quality Assurance activities and maintains established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
• Demonstrates sensitivity to patient's comfort and privacy and responds appropriately to verbal and non-verbal behavior of patients, family, visitors, and hospital personnel.
• Participates in educational programs and in-services meetings.
• Protects and preserves patient rights to confidentiality.
• Performs other job-related duties as requested.

Requirements

High school graduate and completion of an approved Nursing Assistant Training program required. Must have and maintain a current Rhode Island Department of Health CNA license and CPR certification. Maintains any other credentials or certifications necessary to be competent as a NICU Care Assistant. Must be at least 18 years old. Must be proficient in the English language. Demonstrated mathematical proficiency required.
