Position Highlights

The primary purpose of this role is to coordinate and direct the day-to-day activities of skilled trades staff, specifically overseeing Masons and Heavy Equipment Operators to ensure that university facilities and machinery operate reliably and safely. As a manager, the supervisor is directly responsible for training staff, setting performance expectations, evaluating employee performance, and making operational decisions that directly impact team effectiveness. Additionally, the position manages shop resources, which includes establishing work schedules, controlling inventory, procuring tools, and coordinating operating budgets. Finally, the supervisor enforces strict compliance with OSHA regulations, building codes, and safety standards to maintain quality control and promote a strong safety culture within the shop. This position serves as a key leader within University Facility Services and is responsible for ensuring construction projects support the University's strategic goals, operational requirements, and long-term campus infrastructure needs. The position may be required to respond to emergency situations and support after-hours project activities as necessary. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Coordinate, schedule, and direct day-to-day masonry construction, concrete restoration, and site excavation projects.
• Partner with University departments to review project plans, estimate material and labor resource requirements, and develop operational schedules that minimize disruptions to campus operations.
• Directly supervise and coordinate the activities of Skilled Crafts staff, including Mason IIs, a Lead Mason IV, and Heavy Equipment Operators.
• Assign daily work priorities and work orders; provide technical guidance on structural layouts, brick/stone masonry, concrete work, and heavy machinery utilization; conduct formal performance evaluations; and support continuous employee development.
• Manage the unit's operating budget and procurement activities.
• Oversee trade-specific inventory, tool procurement, and the routine maintenance, inspection, and servicing of university vehicles and heavy operating equipment.
• Communicate project statuses, timelines, and utility service interruptions with campus stakeholders, contractors, and departmental leadership.
• Enforce compliance with OSHA regulations, construction safety standards (including silica dust and trenching/excavation safety), building codes, and University policies.
• Perform regular job site inspections to evaluate the quality of masonry finishes, structural conformance, and equipment safety, implementing corrective actions where needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of construction project management principles, practices, and methodologies.
• Knowledge of commercial construction methods, materials, building systems, and infrastructure.
• Knowledge of local, state, and federal building codes, safety regulations, and construction standards.
• Ability to develop and manage project schedules, budgets, scopes, and contracts.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, engineering drawings, and construction documents.
• Strong leadership and team management skills.
• Effective negotiation and contract administration skills.
• Ability to analyze problems, develop solutions, and make sound decisions under pressure.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
• Minimum of 3 years of related work experience or equivalent combination of education and work experience required.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, Facilities Management.
• Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience managing construction, facilities, infrastructure, or capital improvement projects.
• Experience supervising employees, contractors, or project teams.
• Experience interpreting construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
