Job Description
JOB SUMMARY
The Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for independently developing, implementing, maintaining, and continuously improving manufacturing processes within a metal fabrication environment. This position focuses on the industrialization of new products, optimization of existing manufacturing processes, development of tooling and fixtures, and implementation of cost-effective manufacturing solutions that support safety, quality, delivery, and productivity objectives. The Manufacturing Engineer demonstrates practical knowledge of metal fabrication processes and applies engineering principles to resolve manufacturing challenges, improve operational efficiency, and support production requirements with limited technical guidance. This position works collaboratively with Engineering, Operations, Quality, Maintenance, Supply Chain, and shop-floor personnel to establish efficient, repeatable, and sustainable manufacturing processes. Success in this position requires demonstrated technical competency, independent problem-solving ability, ownership of assigned projects, effective communication, and a team-oriented approach to achieving manufacturing objectives.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Manufacturing Process Development
- Lead/participate in projects related to capital investments, manufacturing flow and process improvement.
- Develop manufacturing routings and standard manufacturing times for Getman manufactured products.
- Provide technical support for manufacturing operations involving laser cutting, plasma cutting, CNC machining, press brake forming, welding, assembly, and finishing.
- Assign related operations to materials in the methods of manufacturing in the ERP system to direct proper timing of components at each operation for components and assembled vehicles.
- Apply Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles to improve product and process efficiency.
- Provide support to CAD/CAM for new and existing CNC programs using Mastercam and other software packages as necessary.
- Identify, develop, and implement opportunities to reduce setup time, cycle time, scrap, rework, and overall manufacturing cost.
- Examine specifications, engineering blueprints, tool orders, and shop data and work with engineering and shop personnel to resolve design problems related to material characteristics, dimensional tolerances, service requirements, manufacturing procedures, and cost.
- Through teamwork - demonstrate accountability, professionalism, and a willingness to support team objectives.
- Other duties as assigned.
Tooling, Fixtures, and Equipment
- Independently design, develop, and implement manufacturing fixtures, weld fixtures, assembly aids, and production tooling.
- Perform cost engineering and standard analysis on products and processes.
- Develops manufacturability design guidelines and specifications for use in product development.
- Evaluate equipment and tooling requirements to improve safety, quality, repeatability, and productivity.
- Provide make versus buy analyses on products and processes by product planning and design from defining manufacturing capabilities.
- Collaborate with Maintenance and Operations to troubleshoot equipment-related process issues and implement sustainable solutions.
- Evaluate tooling and equipment improvements based on cost, functionality, reliability, and manufacturing benefits.
Continuous Improvement and Problem Solving
- Independently identify, develop, and implement continuous improvement initiatives within assigned manufacturing processes.
- Apply Lean Manufacturing principles to eliminate waste, improve production flow, and increase operational efficiency.
- Analyze manufacturing data, production performance, and process capability to identify improvement opportunities.
- Lead root cause investigations for assigned manufacturing issues and develop effective corrective actions.
- Utilize structured problem-solving techniques, including 5 Why, fishbone analysis, and other applicable methods.
- Develop and implement improvements to manufacturing layouts, material flow, work methods, and production processes.
- Evaluate improvement effectiveness through measurable performance results.
- Support manufacturing process standardization and sharing of best practices across production operations.
Quality and Technical Support
- Independently interpret engineering drawings, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and applicable manufacturing specifications.
- Collaborate with Quality to develop process controls, address manufacturing nonconformances, and implement corrective actions.
- Support dimensional verification, inspection requirements, and process capability improvements.
- Troubleshoot and resolve manufacturing issues through practical, data-driven engineering solutions.
- Evaluate dimensional and process variation to identify root causes and recommend corrective actions.
- Coordinate implementation of engineering changes and maintain accurate manufacturing documentation.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in manufacturing engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical discipline and 3+ years of experience preferred.
- Relevant manufacturing certifications, technical training, and practical fabrication experience are valued – (CAD) SolidWorks, CAM (Mastercam) programming, welding, etc.
