Leads and coordinates the short and long-term operations of the designated laboratory area.

Implements new programs, tests, methods, instrumentation, and procedures by investigating alternatives; preparing proposals, developing, and performing validation testing; and monitoring performance.
Serves as a technical resource/lead across the health system, as applicable, including standardizing instrumentation, procedures, and competencies. Collaborates with site leadership to understand and support the technical operations of the assigned areas and provide technical guidance when needed.
Maintains laboratory staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees. Completes operational requirements by scheduling and assigning employees; following up on work results. Develops a competent team by coaching and providing corrective action, when needed; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.
Maintains quality results by actively participating in the laboratory quality assurance program; consulting with pathologists; performing proficiency surveys; reviewing quality control and quality assurance reports; making adjustments in policy and procedures; generating reports; and maintaining records.
Ensures departmental compliance with applicable regulatory agencies including checklist compliance and staff competency. Maintains a neat and organized workspace that is regulatory inspection-ready at all times.
Develops and manages a department budget for assigned areas to concur with organizational and department goals. Determines most cost-effective method for performing testing; negotiates with vendors for best pricing. Maintains current knowledge of discipline-specific coding and billing to ensure charges are appropriately created and applied to patient and/or client accounts.
Maintains laboratory equipment performance by establishing quality standards; developing operations, quality, and troubleshooting procedures; ensuring staff compliance; certifying instrument performance; arranging equipment replacement, service, and repair. Maintains laboratory supply inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders; and verifying receipt. Identifies and implements opportunities for cost-savings that do not negatively impact quality or efficiency.
Ensures productivity by monitoring workload; identifies peak and slack periods; makes operational and staffing adjustments. Steps into the workflow as needed. Resolves problems by consulting with pathologists, other laboratory managers, technical specialists, directors, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals; actively participates in committee meetings.
Creates a work environment that positively promotes process improvement, innovation, and collaboration. Explores opportunities to add value to job (innovative ideas) to benefit the organization and taking ownership of the outcome.
Maintains professional and technical knowledge by seeking out learning opportunities and establishing professional networks. Serves as a resource for both internal and external inquiries and supports expansion of information by sharing knowledge with students and care teams.
Required Minimum Education: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with course work sufficient to meet the requirements of the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) for certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Technologist, Histotechnologist, Cytotechnologist, Specialist, or HEW (MT).
Required Minimum Experience: Three years of experience working in an acute care facility as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Technologist, Histotechnologist, or Cytotechnologist; Two years of experience leading or supervising staff, preferred.
Required License/Certifications: MLS(ASCP), MT(ASCP), HTL(ASCP), CT(ASCP), categorical or specialist (ASCP), MT(HEW), or MT(AMT)
Ability to work cooperatively with all types of personalities both inside and outside the organization. Ability to travel between locations.
