Position Summary
The Maintenance Engineer is a highly skilled, hands-on member of the Maintenance team responsible for supporting the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of production equipment, tooling, facilities, and building systems across All-State Industries' three West Des Moines manufacturing facilities. These operations include die cutting, urethane manufacturing, and engineered/CNC plastics manufacturing, creating a diverse maintenance environment requiring strong mechanical aptitude, electrical troubleshooting capabilities, resourcefulness, and the ability to work across a wide variety of equipment and facility needs.
This position is intended for an experienced maintenance professional who can independently diagnose problems, complete repairs, improve equipment reliability, and serve as a technical resource to production and other members of the Maintenance team. The successful candidate will be equally comfortable troubleshooting production equipment, completing preventive maintenance, assisting with tooling or process improvements, and addressing facility-related needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Equipment Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain a broad range of industrial production equipment and supporting systems.
- Perform mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and controls-related troubleshooting and repairs.
- Diagnose equipment failures and determine appropriate corrective action to safely restore equipment to production.
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, equipment drawings, technical manuals, and related documentation.
- Troubleshoot motors, drives, sensors, switches, relays, controls, power supplies, and other industrial electrical components.
- Support CNC and other automated manufacturing equipment, where applicable.
- Perform equipment installation, modification, alignment, adjustment, and commissioning activities.
- Assist with fabrication, machining, welding, tooling, fixtures, and equipment modifications based on experience and business needs.
Preventive Maintenance & Reliability
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance inspections and repairs on production equipment and facility systems.
- Help develop and improve preventive maintenance procedures and schedules.
- Identify recurring equipment failures and recommend permanent corrective actions rather than relying solely on temporary repairs.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, repair history, parts usage, and PM documentation.
- Identify critical spare parts and assist with maintaining appropriate maintenance inventories.
- Support efforts to improve equipment uptime, reliability, safety, and overall equipment effectiveness.
Production & Engineering Support
- Partner with Production, Quality, and other departments to troubleshoot equipment and process issues.
- Assist with equipment and tooling improvements that enhance safety, quality, productivity, ergonomics, or equipment reliability.
- Provide technical input for new equipment, equipment modifications, tooling, and manufacturing processes.
- Participate in continuous improvement activities and root-cause problem solving.
- Assist production personnel with equipment setup, adjustments, and troubleshooting as needed.
Facility & Building Maintenance
- Perform and coordinate general facility maintenance and repairs across three West Des Moines manufacturing buildings.
- Inspect and maintain building systems and infrastructure including doors, lighting, plumbing, compressed air, HVAC-related components, roofs, drains, walls, floors, and other facility systems.
- Perform minor electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, and general repair work within the employee's training and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Perform routine facility and roof inspections and coordinate repairs or outside contractors when specialized services are required.
- Assist with snow, weather, grounds, housekeeping, cleanup, and other facility needs when circumstances require Maintenance support.
- Coordinate with outside contractors and service providers as assigned.
Safety & Team Responsibilities
- Follow OSHA requirements, lockout/tagout procedures, electrical safety practices, machine guarding requirements, and company safety policies.
- Identify unsafe equipment or facility conditions and take appropriate action to correct or escalate concerns.
- Work collaboratively as part of a four-person Maintenance team, sharing knowledge and assisting other team members as needed.
- Provide technical guidance and training to less experienced maintenance personnel when appropriate.
- Respond to urgent equipment and facility issues and appropriately prioritize work based on safety, production impact, and business needs.
- Maintain work areas, tools, equipment, and maintenance spaces in a safe and organized condition.
- Perform other maintenance, production support, and facility-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Qualifications Required

- Experience with pneumatic and/or hydraulic systems.
- Ability to read electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, equipment manuals, and technical documentation.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to systematically diagnose equipment failures.
- Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, electrical diagnostic equipment, and maintenance equipment.
- Ability to work independently while functioning effectively as part of a small Maintenance team.

- Initiative and ownership of problems through completion.
- Flexibility to move between production equipment, facility systems, tooling, and improvement projects.
- Effective communication with production employees, supervisors, engineers, vendors, and contractors.
- A practical, hands-on approach and willingness to assist wherever needed.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
This position works primarily in an industrial manufacturing environment and requires regular walking, standing, bending, kneeling, climbing, reaching, and working around production equipment. The employee must be able to safely use ladders and lifts, access equipment and building areas for inspection and repair, and lift and move materials and equipment consistent with company safety practices. Work may occasionally be performed outdoors, at heights, on rooftops, or in areas exposed to temperature changes, noise, dust, oils, or other conditions typical of a manufacturing environment. Appropriate personal protective equipment must be worn as required.
Success in This Role
A successful Maintenance Engineer will become a trusted technical resource across all three West Des Moines operations—someone who can be given a difficult equipment or facility problem, systematically determine the cause, develop an appropriate solution, and see the work through to completion while helping strengthen the overall capability of the Maintenance team.
