ATTENTION ALASKA RESIDENTS! The Department of Labor and Workforce Development, Division of Workers Compensation, is recruiting for an Investigator 1/2/3 located in Anchorage! No Cover Letter Required! This position is in the General Government Unit (GGU) at a Range 14/16/18.
This position is flexibly staffed and may be filled at the Investigator 1, Investigator 2, or Investigator 3 level, depending on the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience. Work progresses from routine investigations performed with close supervision at the Investigator 1 level, to independent journey-level work at Investigator 2, and to unusual, difficult, or exceptionally complex investigations at Investigator 3.
Investigate reports of employers operating without required workers’ compensation insurance and allegations of workers’ compensation fraud using interviews, records research, databases, and field work. Analyze payroll, insurance, employment, business, financial, medical, and other records to determine compliance, identify violations, and develop evidence. Prepare investigative reports, petitions, discovery requests, subpoenas, hearing materials, exhibits, and other documentation, and provide factual testimony regarding investigations personally conducted. Work with employers, employees, witnesses, insurers, attorneys, and Local, State, and Federal partners to obtain information, coordinate investigative activity, and support appropriate enforcement action.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) enforces compliance with the Alaska Workers’ Compensation Act through thorough and fair fraud investigations, accountability for violations, and proactive public education intended to prevent uninsured injuries. SIU values integrity, respect, dedication and commitment, accountability, and a collaborative team environment. This position directly supports the Division’s responsibility to promote compliance and protect Alaska workers and employers.
This position offers meaningful public-service work with varied investigative assignments and direct opportunities to improve compliance with Alaska’s workers’ compensation laws. The flex structure provides a defined career path from the entry-level Investigator 1 through the journey-level Investigator 2 and advanced Investigator 3. New investigators receive structured on-the-job training, coaching from experienced investigators, and progressive assignments designed to build investigative, analytical, legal, interviewing, and case-presentation skills. SIU works collaboratively and shares information and expertise across the team to support consistent, fair, and effective investigations.
This position is based in the Division of Workers’ Compensation office in midtown Anchorage and combines office-based research and case preparation with field work such as interviews, site visits, service of documents, and other investigative activity. The position requires local driving and occasional statewide travel, which may include remote locations, inclement weather, and travel by small aircraft or boat when necessary.
