Join our team as an Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) – Child Protective Service (CPS) Caseworker (Social Service Specialist 1) and play a vital role in protecting children and empowering families.
The Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) District 2 (Multnomah County) is looking for a permanent full-time Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) – Child Protective Service (CPS) Caseworker (Social Service Specialist 1) for the Child Protective Services Unit of its Indian Child Welfare Act (“ICWA”) Program. Our ICWA Program includes 6 dedicated CPS workers, 9 dedicated permanency workers, 2 dedicated support staff, 1 dedicated Case Aid, 1 dedicated certifier and 1 dedicated family time coordinator. As an ICWA CPS Caseworker, you will:
Per pursuant to ORS 419B.021, states that any position engaged in child protective investigations and/or custody determinations must meet the educational requirements. Experience alone will not meet the minimum qualifications for those positions. Degree must be completed, not in progress. A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record are required for this position. AND
Preference will be given to candidates who have experience working with Tribal populations and communities.

Work will be conducted in offices, participant's homes, and other community sites. Occasional travel is required for meetings, trainings, and case related activities. Employees’ work schedule will be Monday - Friday from 8 am - 5 pm PT; hours may fluctuate based on service needs. Occasional, compensated overtime may be required, including evening and weekend work. You will interact with a wide range of people including some who have experienced trauma and may exhibit challenges in controlling their emotions. You may encounter stressful situations that require quick decision-making to ensure safety of yourself and others. Activities include traversing stairs, moving on uneven terrain, and helping children (weighing up to 50 pounds) in and out of car seats.

Within three days of hire, you will be required to complete the US Department of Homeland Security’s I-9 form confirming authorization to work in the United States. ODHS will use E-Verify to confirm that you are authorized to work in the United States. Finalists must be cleared by the FBI Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) through a fingerprint-based criminal records check. A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record are required for this position.
